How to Replace the Water Pump on a 2010-2017 Chevrolet Equinox 2.4L (Timing Chain Driven) (Engine: Inline 4 2.4L)
Step-by-step timing cover service guide with required tools, parts list, timing tips, and torque spec notes for 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017
🔧 Equinox - Water Pump Replacement
On your Equinox’s 2.4L engine, the water pump is mounted behind the front engine cover and is driven by the timing chain. That means this job is more like a “timing cover/timing chain service” than a simple bolt-on pump swap, and careful timing alignment is critical to avoid engine damage.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 6-10 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a fully cool engine; hot coolant can cause severe burns.
- ⚠️ Support the engine before removing the right-side engine mount.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers/tools clear when rotating the crankshaft.
- ⚠️ If timing marks are misaligned, you can cause internal engine damage.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the battery negative cable before starting.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- Disconnect the battery using a 10mm socket (negative cable first).
- Plan to change the oil after the repair; coolant/cleaner can contaminate oil during cover work.
- Know this term: TDC means “Top Dead Center,” where cylinder #1 is at the top of its stroke and timing marks line up.
- Know this term: RTV is a silicone sealant used where there is no paper gasket.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Drain coolant
- Place a drain pan (at least 10-liter) under the radiator drain.
- Open the radiator drain using a flathead screwdriver and remove the surge tank cap by hand to help it drain.
- Close the drain when finished (snug only; do not overtighten).
Step 2: Raise the right front and remove the wheel/splash shields
- Lift with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Remove the right front wheel using a 19mm socket.
- Remove the right inner fender liner/splash shields using a trim clip removal tool and socket set (8mm-21mm).
Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt
- Relieve belt tension using a serpentine belt tool (specialty).
- Slip the belt off and remove it from the engine bay.
- Take a photo of belt routing first.
Step 4: Support the engine and remove the right engine mount
- Support the engine with an engine support bar (specialty) or a jack and wood block (to support engine) under the oil pan.
- Remove the right mount and bracket fasteners using an E-Torx socket set (E10-E14) and socket set (8mm-21mm).
- Torque to OEM specification during reassembly (mount bolts are torque-critical).
Step 5: Remove the crank pulley (harmonic balancer)
- A “harmonic balancer” is the crank pulley; it can be press-fit and needs a puller.
- Remove the crank bolt using a 1/2" drive breaker bar and the correct socket set (8mm-21mm).
- Remove the pulley using a harmonic balancer puller kit (specialty).
- Torque to OEM specification for the crank bolt during reassembly (this is critical).
Step 6: Set engine to TDC and mark timing
- Rotate the engine by hand (clockwise) using a socket set (8mm-21mm) on the crank until timing marks align at TDC.
- Use a paint marker to add your own reference marks on the chain and sprockets.
- Never use the starter to rotate the engine.
Step 7: Remove the front cover
- Remove front cover fasteners using an E-Torx socket set (E10-E14), Torx bit set (T20-T50), and socket set (8mm-21mm).
- Carefully separate the cover using a flathead screwdriver only at factory pry points.
- Clean gasket/RTV surfaces using a gasket scraper, plastic razor blades, and brake cleaner spray.
Step 8: Release timing chain tension and remove chain/guides as needed
- Remove the timing chain tensioner and guides using a socket set (8mm-21mm) and Torx bit set (T20-T50).
- Keep all parts in order on a clean towel.
- Torque to OEM specification for the tensioner and guide fasteners on reassembly.
Step 9: Remove and replace the water pump
- Remove water pump bolts using a socket set (8mm-21mm).
- Remove the pump and gasket/O-ring. Expect more coolant to drain; keep the drain pan (at least 10-liter) under it.
- Clean the sealing surface with plastic razor blades and brake cleaner spray.
- Install the new gasket/O-ring and water pump.
- Torque to OEM specification for water pump bolts (do not overtighten).
Step 10: Reinstall timing components and verify timing marks
- Reinstall chain, guides, and tensioner using a socket set (8mm-21mm) and Torx bit set (T20-T50).
- Confirm all timing marks (and your paint marks) align exactly before sealing the cover.
- Rotate the engine by hand two full turns using a socket set (8mm-21mm) and re-check timing alignment.
- If marks don’t align, stop and correct it.
Step 11: Install the front cover and crank seal
- Install a new front crank seal from your front cover gasket set.
- Apply timing cover RTV sealant (engine-safe) where the factory calls for RTV (typically at joint corners).
- Install the cover and hand-start all bolts, then tighten evenly using an E-Torx socket set (E10-E14) and torque wrench (3/8" drive, 10-100 Nm range).
- Torque to OEM specification for cover fasteners.
Step 12: Reassemble everything removed
- Reinstall the crank pulley using the correct installer from the harmonic balancer puller kit (specialty) if required.
- Install and tension the new belt using a serpentine belt tool (specialty).
- Reinstall the engine mount using an E-Torx socket set (E10-E14) and torque wrench.
- Reinstall the splash shields and wheel using a trim clip removal tool and 19mm socket.
- Torque to OEM specification for wheel lug nuts.
Step 13: Refill coolant and change oil
- Refill the surge tank with Dex-Cool coolant (50/50 premix) using a funnel.
- Change engine oil and filter (recommended after timing cover work).
✅ After Repair
- Reconnect the battery negative cable using a 10mm socket.
- Start the engine and let it idle while watching coolant level and checking for leaks around the front cover and water pump area.
- Turn the heater to HOT and verify you get steady heat (helps purge air).
- Test drive 10-15 minutes, recheck for leaks, and recheck coolant level after it cools completely.
- If you get a check engine light or abnormal noise, shut it down and re-check timing.
