🔧 CR-V - Water Pump Replacement
The water pump circulates coolant through your engine and radiator. If it’s leaking, noisy, or causing overheating, replacing it restores proper cooling and helps prevent engine damage.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2.5-4.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine; hot coolant can spray and burn you.
- ⚠️ Support your CR-V with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the belt and pulleys while rotating the tensioner.
- ⚠️ Coolant is toxic—catch all coolant and dispose of it properly.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is recommended to prevent accidental starts.

- Metric socket set (8mm-19mm)
- 10mm socket
- 12mm socket
- 14mm socket
- 3/8" ratchet
- 3/8" torque wrench (10-80 ft-lbs range)
- 6" socket extension

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Water pump - Qty: 1
- Water pump O-ring / seal - Qty: 1
- Honda-compatible coolant (Type 2 equivalent, 50/50 premix) - Qty: 2 gallons
- Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1 (recommended if cracked/glazed)
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Let the engine cool fully (ideally 2+ hours).
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Raise the front-right corner with a floor jack and support with jack stands.
- Remove the front-right wheel using your metric socket set (19mm typical).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the right splash shield
- Remove the plastic clips/screws from the right inner fender splash shield using a trim clip remover and flathead screwdriver.
- Pull the splash shield back to expose the belt area and water pump.
Step 2: Drain the coolant
- Place a drain pan (at least 10-quart) under the radiator drain.
- Slowly remove the radiator cap (only when cool) and open the drain cock using a flathead screwdriver if needed.
- Let coolant drain fully, then close the drain cock snugly by hand. Don’t overtighten plastic drains.
Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt
- The serpentine belt is the long belt that drives accessories like the alternator and water pump.
- Put a 14mm socket and 3/8" ratchet on the belt tensioner bolt.
- Rotate the tensioner to relieve belt tension, then slip the belt off a pulley and remove it.
- Tip: Take a quick photo of the belt routing before removal.
Step 4: Remove the water pump pulley bolts
- Hold the pulley by hand and remove the pulley bolts using a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
- Remove the pulley and set it aside.
- Torque on reassembly: Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs)
Step 5: Unbolt the water pump
- Place shop rags under the pump area to catch remaining coolant using shop rags.
- Remove the water pump mounting bolts using a 10mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 6" socket extension.
- Pull the pump straight off the engine. Some coolant will spill into your drain pan.
Step 6: Clean the sealing surface
- Use a plastic scraper and shop rags to clean the mating surface on the engine.
- Do not gouge the metal. The new seal must sit on a smooth, clean surface.
Step 7: Install the new water pump and seal
- Install the new O-ring/seal onto the new pump.
- Position the new pump and start all bolts by hand (prevents cross-threading).
- Tighten bolts evenly using a 10mm socket.
- Final torque: Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs)
Step 8: Reinstall the pulley and belt
- Reinstall the water pump pulley and hand-start the bolts using a 10mm socket.
- Tighten pulley bolts evenly with a 3/8" torque wrench.
- Final torque: Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs)
- Route the serpentine belt correctly, rotate the tensioner using a 14mm socket, and slip the belt into place.
- Visually confirm the belt is centered on every pulley groove.
Step 9: Reinstall splash shield and wheel
- Reinstall the splash shield using the trim clip remover and flathead screwdriver.
- Reinstall the wheel using your metric socket set, lower the vehicle, then snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 10: Refill and bleed the cooling system
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Fill the radiator with Honda-compatible coolant (50/50 premix) using a funnel.
- Fill the coolant reservoir to the MAX line.
- Start the engine and set the heater to hottest and fan to medium.
- Let it idle until the radiator fan cycles on, topping off coolant as the level drops.
- Install the radiator cap, then shut the engine off and let it cool completely.
- Recheck the radiator and reservoir levels and top off as needed.
✅ After Repair
- Check for leaks around the water pump with the engine running and after shutdown.
- Watch the temperature gauge on your first test drive; it should stay normal.
- After the next full cool-down (later that day or next morning), recheck coolant level in the reservoir and top off.
- If you hear belt squeal, recheck belt routing and that it’s seated in all grooves.
