🔧 Highlander - Water Pump Replacement

On your Highlander, the water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator. Replacing it involves draining coolant, removing the drive belt and pump, cleaning the sealing surface, then installing the new pump and refilling/bleeding the cooling system.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a fully cold engine; hot coolant can cause severe burns.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack.
  • ⚠️ Keep coolant off belts and pulleys; it can cause slipping/noise.
  • ⚠️ Coolant is toxic; capture and dispose of it properly.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair, but keep hands/tools clear of the radiator fans.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 10 quarts)
  • Funnel
  • Spill-free coolant funnel kit (specialty)
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-80 ft-lbs range)
  • Socket set: 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 19mm
  • Wrench set: 10mm, 12mm, 14mm
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flat plastic scraper
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket / O-ring (if not included with pump) - Qty: 1
  • Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink) premixed - Qty: 2 gallons
  • Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1 Optional but smart if old/cracked

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Let the engine cool completely (best: overnight).
  • Raise the right-front corner with a floor jack and support with jack stands.
  • Remove the right-front wheel for easier access through the fender area.
  • Serpentine belt = the single belt that drives accessories.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the right-front wheel

  • Use a 19mm socket and 1/2" drive breaker bar to loosen lug nuts slightly on the ground.
  • Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift, then set the vehicle on jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Remove the lug nuts with the 19mm socket and remove the wheel.

Step 2: Remove the right splash shield / inner fender access panel

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out plastic clips.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove any 10mm screws/bolts.
  • Move the shield aside to expose the belt and water pump area.

Step 3: Drain the coolant

  • Place a drain pan (at least 10 quarts) under the radiator drain.
  • Open the radiator drain cock carefully by hand (or use a flat plastic scraper handle gently if needed).
  • Remove the radiator cap to help it drain faster (only if cold).

Step 4: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the belt tensioner and release belt tension.
  • Slide the belt off one pulley, then remove it from the rest of the pulleys.
  • Take a quick photo of belt routing.

Step 5: Remove the water pump pulley (if equipped)

  • Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the pulley bolts.
  • If the pulley wants to spin, hold it by hand firmly or use the belt temporarily for resistance.

Step 6: Remove the water pump

  • Place the drain pan (at least 10 quarts) under the pump area; more coolant will spill.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
  • Gently wiggle the pump free and remove it.

Step 7: Clean the sealing surface

  • Use a flat plastic scraper to remove old gasket material without gouging the aluminum.
  • Spray brake cleaner spray on a shop towel and wipe the surface clean and dry.
  • Confirm the old gasket/O-ring is fully removed and not stuck to the engine.

Step 8: Install the new water pump

  • Install the new gasket/O-ring onto the new pump (or onto the engine side as designed).
  • Position the pump and start all bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs) using a 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-80 ft-lbs range).

Step 9: Reinstall the water pump pulley

  • Install the pulley and start bolts by hand.
  • Tighten pulley bolts evenly with a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs) using a 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-80 ft-lbs range).

Step 10: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt around the pulleys (match your photo).
  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the tensioner, then slip the belt onto the last pulley.
  • Double-check the belt is fully seated in every pulley groove.

Step 11: Reinstall splash shield and wheel

  • Reinstall the splash shield using the 10mm socket and trim clip removal tool (to reinstall clips).
  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle, then tighten lug nuts using the 19mm socket.
  • Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs) using a 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-80 ft-lbs range).

Step 12: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Close the radiator drain cock.
  • Use a spill-free coolant funnel kit (specialty) and add Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink) premixed into the radiator fill point.
  • Start the engine and set the heater to HOT with the fan on LOW to help purge air.
  • Let it warm up while watching the coolant level; add coolant as bubbles purge out.
  • When bubbles stop and heat blows consistently hot, shut the engine off and let it cool completely, then top off radiator and overflow tank using a funnel.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and inspect around the water pump for leaks with a flashlight.
  • Watch the temperature gauge on a short test drive; it should stay normal.
  • Recheck coolant level the next morning (cold engine) and top off as needed.
  • If you hear belt squeal, recheck belt routing and seating on pulleys.
