🔧 Highlander - Water Pump Replacement

On your Highlander, the water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator. When it leaks (often from the “weep hole”) or the bearing gets noisy, replacement is the correct fix to prevent overheating and engine damage.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine; hot coolant can spray and burn.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Keep coolant off drive belts and pulleys; it can cause slipping.
  • ⚠️ Coolant is toxic to pets and kids; drain into a sealed container immediately.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this job, but keep the key off.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Wheel chocks
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Drain pan (at least 3-gallon)
  • Funnel
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10–80 ft-lbs range)
  • 3/8" drive extension set
  • Breaker bar (3/8" or 1/2" drive)
  • Flat trim clip tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Plastic gasket scraper
  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket / O-ring (as supplied for your pump) - Qty: 1
  • Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink, premixed 50/50) - Qty: 2-3 gallons
  • Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1 Recommended while you’re there

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Let the engine cool fully (at least a few hours).
  • Plan to lift the right-front corner for access through the wheel well.
  • Have a sealed container ready for used coolant.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and access the right-front wheel well

  • Use a floor jack to lift the right-front jacking point and place the vehicle on jack stands.
  • Remove the right-front wheel using the correct lug tool for your wheels (commonly a 21mm socket).
  • Remove the right-front inner fender/splash shield fasteners using a 10mm socket and flat trim clip tool.

Step 2: Drain the coolant

  • Place a drain pan under the radiator drain cock area.
  • Slowly loosen the radiator cap to the first stop (only when fully cool), then remove it.
  • Open the radiator drain cock and drain coolant fully into the pan. Use shop towels to control spills.

Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt

  • From the wheel well, locate the belt tensioner.
  • Use a 14mm socket with a breaker bar to rotate the tensioner and relieve belt tension.
  • Slip the belt off one pulley and remove it from the engine.
  • Tip: Take a photo of belt routing first.

Step 4: Remove the water pump pulley

  • Hold the pulley from turning by keeping the belt on briefly (or by hand carefully), then loosen the pulley bolts.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the water pump pulley bolts and remove the pulley.
  • During reassembly: Torque pulley bolts to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Remove the water pump

  • Place the drain pan under the pump area; more coolant will spill when the pump comes off.
  • Remove any brackets/fasteners blocking access using a 10mm socket and 12mm socket as applicable.
  • Remove the water pump mounting bolts using a 10mm socket.
  • Pull the pump straight off the engine. If it sticks, gently wiggle it by hand; do not pry hard on sealing surfaces.
  • During reassembly: Torque water pump bolts to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 6: Clean the sealing surface

  • Use a plastic gasket scraper to clean the engine’s water pump mounting surface.
  • Wipe clean with shop towels until the surface is dry and smooth.
  • Tip: Don’t gouge aluminum with metal tools.

Step 7: Install the new water pump

  • Install the new gasket/O-ring onto the new pump (match how the old one was positioned).
  • Position the pump onto the engine and start all bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a 10mm socket.
  • Final tighten with a torque wrench: Torque water pump bolts to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall the pulley and belt

  • Reinstall the pulley and thread bolts by hand using a 10mm socket.
  • Use a torque wrench: Torque pulley bolts to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
  • Route the belt correctly and rotate the tensioner with a 14mm socket and breaker bar to slip the belt onto the last pulley.

Step 9: Reassemble splash shield and wheel

  • Reinstall the inner fender/splash shield using a 10mm socket and flat trim clip tool.
  • Reinstall the wheel and snug lug nuts (use your lug tool, commonly a 21mm socket).
  • Lower the vehicle with the floor jack, then torque lug nuts with a torque wrench to the wheel-spec for your Highlander.

Step 10: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Close the radiator drain cock.
  • Refill the radiator with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink, premixed 50/50) using a funnel.
  • Fill the coolant reservoir to the “FULL” line.
  • Start the engine and set HVAC to MAX HEAT, fan on low.
  • Let it idle and watch for air bubbles; top off as the level drops.
  • When the radiator fan cycles and heat is steady, reinstall the radiator cap.

✅ After Repair

  • Check carefully for leaks around the pump with the engine idling.
  • Test drive 10–15 minutes, then recheck coolant level after it cools completely and top off the reservoir.
  • Look under the vehicle the next morning for any fresh coolant drips.
  • Dispose of used coolant properly at a recycling center/parts store.
