🔧 Water Pump - Replacement

The water pump circulates coolant through your engine and radiator. If it is leaking, noisy, or the engine is running hot, replacing it now helps prevent overheating and engine damage.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work only on a fully cool engine. Hot coolant can cause serious burns.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting.
  • Keep fingers and tools clear of the fan and belt path.
  • Use a drain pan and dispose of old coolant properly.
  • Do not open the cooling system while it is hot or pressurized.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • 18mm socket
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • Torque wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Gasket scraper
  • Plastic trim tool
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Jack and jack stands rated for your truck

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket - Qty: 1
  • Coolant - Qty: 2-3 gallons
  • Thermostat gasket - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool completely.
  • Raise the front of the truck only if needed for drain access and support it with jack stands.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Have a drain pan ready before opening the cooling system.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain the cooling system

  • Place a drain pan under the radiator drain area.
  • Use a plastic trim tool or by hand to open the radiator drain and let the coolant drain.
  • Close the drain when flow slows to a drip.

Step 2: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) on the belt tensioner to relieve tension.
  • Slip the belt off one pulley and remove it from the engine bay.
  • Take a photo of the belt routing first.

Step 3: Remove the fan and shroud

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the fan shroud fasteners.
  • Use a 15mm socket to remove the fan clutch nut if equipped.
  • Lift the fan and shroud out carefully together if room allows.

Step 4: Remove the water pump pulley

  • Use a 13mm socket to remove the water pump pulley bolts.
  • Hold the pulley steady as you remove the last bolts.

Step 5: Remove the water pump

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the water pump bolts.
  • Break the pump free and remove it from the engine.
  • Clean the mounting surface with a gasket scraper until it is smooth and free of old gasket material.

Step 6: Install the new water pump

  • Place the new water pump gasket in position.
  • Set the new water pump in place and start all bolts by hand.
  • Use a torque wrench and 10mm socket to tighten the water pump bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
  • Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reinstall the pulley, fan, and belt

  • Install the pulley and tighten the bolts with a 13mm socket.
  • Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • Reinstall the fan and shroud using a 10mm socket.
  • Reinstall the serpentine belt using the serpentine belt tool (specialty).
  • Make sure the belt sits fully in every groove.

Step 8: Refill the cooling system

  • Close the radiator drain.
  • Use a funnel to refill with the correct coolant mixture.
  • Fill to the proper level in the radiator and reservoir.

✅ After Repair

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Start the engine and let it idle with the heater on high.
  • Check for coolant leaks around the water pump, hoses, and drain.
  • Watch the temperature gauge and make sure it stays normal.
  • After cooling down, recheck the coolant level and top off if needed.
