🔧 Water Pump - Replacement
Your Silverado’s water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator. When it leaks, gets noisy, or stops moving coolant, the engine can overheat fast, so replacing it promptly is important.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work only on a completely cool engine. Hot coolant can cause severe burns.
- Use jack stands if you raise the truck. Never rely on a jack alone.
- Keep hands clear of the fan and belt path while loosening or removing components.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting. Use a 10mm wrench.
- Coolant is toxic. Catch and dispose of it properly.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool fully before opening the cooling system.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
- Place a drain pan under the radiator drain area.
- If the belt shows cracks or glazing, replace it now.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Drain the coolant
- Use a drain pan under the radiator.
- Open the radiator drain or remove the lower hose carefully to drain coolant.
- Save coolant only if it is clean and you plan to reuse it. Most DIYers should replace it.
Step 2: Remove the serpentine belt
- Use a serpentine belt tool or 15mm socket to rotate the belt tensioner.
- Slip the belt off the water pump pulley and remove it from the engine.
- Take a belt routing photo first.
Step 3: Remove the fan shroud and cooling fan assembly
- Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the fan shroud fasteners.
- Carefully lift the shroud and fan assembly out together if room allows.
- Move slowly so you do not damage the radiator fins.
Step 4: Remove the water pump pulley
- Use a 15mm socket to remove the pulley bolts.
- Hold the pulley steady while loosening the bolts.
- Remove the pulley and set it aside.
Step 5: Remove the water pump
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch extension to remove the water pump bolts.
- Break the pump loose and pull it away from the engine.
- Catch any remaining coolant in the drain pan.
Step 6: Clean the mounting surface
- Use a gasket scraper and shop towels to clean the engine surface.
- Remove every bit of old gasket material.
- Do not gouge the aluminum surface.
Step 7: Install the new water pump
- Install the new gasket on the pump.
- Position the new water pump on the engine by hand.
- Use a 10mm socket to install the bolts finger-tight first.
- Torque to 11 Nm (97 in-lbs).
Step 8: Reinstall the pulley, fan, and belt
- Install the pulley with a 15mm socket.
- Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
- Reinstall the fan shroud and fan assembly with a 13mm socket.
- Route the serpentine belt using the routing diagram under the hood.
- Use the serpentine belt tool to release the tensioner and slip the belt into place.
Step 9: Refill and bleed the cooling system
- Close the drain and refill with the correct coolant mix.
- Fill slowly to help reduce air pockets.
- Start the engine and let it idle with the heater set to hot.
- Top off coolant as the level drops.
âś… After Repair
- Check for leaks at the pump, hose connections, and drain area.
- Verify the belt tracks correctly and runs quietly.
- Watch engine temperature during the first test drive.
- Recheck coolant level after the engine cools completely.
