🔧 Altima - Water Pump Replacement

Your Altima Hybrid can have two different “water pumps”: the engine coolant water pump (keeps the gasoline engine cool) and a hybrid/inverter electric coolant pump (cools hybrid components). The replacement steps, parts, and locations are different, so we need to identify which one you’re changing before you unbolt anything.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Never touch or disconnect orange high-voltage cables or HV connectors.
  • ⚠️ Work on a cold engine; hot coolant can cause severe burns.
  • ⚠️ Use jack stands if lifting the car; never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Keep coolant away from pets/children; it’s toxic and attractive.
  • ⚠️ If replacing an electric coolant pump, disconnect the 12V negative battery terminal to prevent the pump from running unexpectedly.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Wheel chocks
  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Drain pan (8-liter minimum)
  • Funnel
  • Shop rags
  • Metric socket set (8mm-14mm)
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive extensions (3" and 6")
  • Torque wrench (10-80 Nm range)
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flat trim clip tool
  • Hose clamp pliers
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • OBD2 scan tool (basic live data) (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine coolant water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket/O-ring - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant (Nissan Long Life coolant, blue, premixed) - Qty: 2-3 gallons
  • Accessory drive belt - Qty: 1
  • Hybrid/inverter electric coolant pump - Qty: 1
  • Electric pump hose clamps - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool completely (at least 2 hours).
  • Place a drain pan under the front of the car.
  • If you’re doing the electric coolant pump, disconnect the 12V negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
  • Quick identification (so you pick the right steps):
  • 🔎 The engine water pump is belt-driven and sits on the engine’s accessory-belt side, with a pulley/bolts and coolant hoses nearby.
  • 🔎 The electric coolant pump looks like a small motor/pump with an electrical connector and two coolant hoses, usually mounted near the radiator area/engine bay side.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which pump you’re replacing

  • Open the hood and locate the pump you plan to change.
  • If it has a pulley and sits on the belt path, choose Engine Water Pump steps below.
  • If it has an electrical connector and no pulley, choose Electric Coolant Pump steps below.

Step 2A: Engine Water Pump - Drain coolant

  • Remove the radiator cap only when cold.
  • Use a flat trim clip tool and Phillips screwdriver to remove the lower splash shield as needed for access.
  • Position the drain pan and open the radiator drain (if equipped) to drain coolant.

Step 3A: Engine Water Pump - Remove the accessory drive belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool to rotate the belt tensioner and slide the belt off.
  • Take a photo of belt routing first.

Step 4A: Engine Water Pump - Remove pump and gasket

  • Use metric sockets (typically 10mm/12mm) with a ratchet and extensions to remove the water pump bolts.
  • Use hose clamp pliers to release the hose clamps and remove hoses (expect coolant spill).
  • Remove the pump and remove the old gasket/O-ring.
  • Clean the mating surface with shop rags (do not gouge the aluminum).

Step 5A: Engine Water Pump - Install new pump

  • Install the new gasket/O-ring onto the new pump (orientation matters).
  • Install the pump and hand-thread all bolts to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten bolts in a crisscross pattern: Torque to Nissan factory specification for your pump fasteners.

Step 6A: Engine Water Pump - Reinstall belt and shields

  • Reinstall the accessory belt using the serpentine belt tool.
  • Reinstall splash shields using the flat trim clip tool and Phillips screwdriver.

Step 2B: Electric Coolant Pump - Depower and drain locally

  • Disconnect the 12V negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
  • Place a drain pan under the pump area and pinch off hoses if possible (hose clamp pliers help).

Step 3B: Electric Coolant Pump - Remove pump

  • Unplug the electrical connector (press tab, pull straight).
  • Use hose clamp pliers to move the clamps back, then pull hoses off the pump.
  • Use metric sockets (typically 10mm/12mm) to remove the pump mounting fasteners.

Step 4B: Electric Coolant Pump - Install new pump

  • Install the new pump in the same orientation.
  • Reconnect hoses and install new clamps if needed.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
  • Use a torque wrench on mounting fasteners: Torque to Nissan factory specification.

Step 7: Refill and bleed coolant

  • Refill with Nissan Long Life coolant (blue, premixed) using a funnel.
  • Start the car and set the heater to HOT with the fan on low to help purge air.
  • Watch the temperature gauge and coolant level; top off as the level drops.
  • Use an OBD2 scan tool to monitor coolant temperature and confirm the engine reaches normal temp without overheating.
  • Shut down, let it cool, then recheck and top off the reservoir.

✅ After Repair

  • Check for leaks around the pump, hose joints, and under the car.
  • Road test 10-15 minutes, then recheck coolant level after a full cool-down.
  • If you get warning lights or overheating, stop and recheck for trapped air.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹12,000-₹30,000 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹4,000-₹15,000 (parts only)

You Save: ₹8,000-₹15,000 by doing it yourself!

Panipat labor rates vary, but many shops run ₹800-₹2,000/hour. This repair typically books 2-5 hours depending on pump type and access.

Two quick questions so I can give you the exact correct procedure:

  • Which one are you replacing: engine water pump (belt-driven) or electric hybrid/inverter coolant pump (has a plug)?
  • Are you doing this because of a leak, overheating, or a warning light/code?
