🔧 Malibu - Water Pump Replacement

The water pump circulates coolant through your engine and radiator. When it leaks or the bearing wears out, you’ll lose coolant and can overheat—so replacing it restores proper cooling and prevents engine damage.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Work only on a fully cool engine; hot coolant can cause severe burns.
  • 🛑 Support the car with jack stands on a level surface; never rely on a jack alone.
  • 🛑 Keep coolant off belts and pulleys; it can cause belt slip.
  • 🛑 Dex-Cool coolant is toxic—clean spills and keep away from pets.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required for this job, but keep hands clear of the cooling fans.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Drain pan (at least 3-gallon)
  • Funnel
  • Shop rags
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive extension set
  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • 15mm wrench
  • Torque wrench (10-100 ft-lbs range)
  • Hose clamp pliers
  • Trim clip tool
  • Plastic gasket scraper
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket - Qty: 1
  • Dex-Cool coolant - Qty: 2 gallons
  • Distilled water - Qty: 2 gallons
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1 Optional if cracked or glazed
  • Radiator hose clamp - Qty: 1 Optional if original clamp is weak

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Let the engine cool completely, then slowly remove the coolant reservoir cap to release any leftover pressure.
  • Raise the front of the car with a floor jack and support it securely on jack stands.
  • Place a drain pan under the radiator area to catch coolant.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain the coolant

  • Place a drain pan (at least 3-gallon) under the radiator drain area.
  • Open the radiator drain (petcock) if accessible; if not, remove the lower radiator hose using hose clamp pliers.
  • Use shop rags to control spills, then let the coolant drain fully.

Step 2: Remove the upper engine cover (if equipped)

  • Remove fasteners using a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet, then lift the cover off.

Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Take a picture of the belt routing before removal. This saves headaches later
  • Rotate the belt tensioner using a 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet (or a serpentine belt tool (specialty)).
  • A serpentine belt tool is a long, thin handle that helps move the tensioner in tight spaces.
  • Slip the belt off one pulley, then remove it from the rest of the pulleys by hand.

Step 4: Remove the water pump pulley

  • Hold the pulley from turning by keeping the belt snug on it briefly, or hold it by hand carefully.
  • Remove the pulley bolts using a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet, then remove the pulley.

Step 5: Remove the water pump

  • Position the drain pan (at least 3-gallon) under the water pump area—more coolant will come out.
  • Remove the water pump bolts using a 10mm socket and 13mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 3/8-inch drive extensions as needed.
  • Pull the pump straight off. If it sticks, gently wiggle it—do not pry hard against aluminum surfaces.

Step 6: Clean the sealing surface

  • Use a plastic gasket scraper to remove old gasket material from the engine surface.
  • Spray a rag with brake cleaner spray and wipe the surface until clean and dry.
  • No scratches allowed—gouges can cause leaks.

Step 7: Install the new water pump and gasket

  • Place the new gasket on the new pump (match all bolt holes).
  • Install the pump onto the engine and hand-thread all bolts to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a 10mm socket or 13mm socket.
  • Final tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall the water pump pulley

  • Reinstall the pulley and start the bolts by hand.
  • Tighten using a 10mm socket, then torque with a torque wrench: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt according to your photo/diagram.
  • Rotate the tensioner with a 15mm socket (or serpentine belt tool (specialty)) and slip the belt onto the last pulley.
  • Double-check the belt is fully seated in every pulley groove using a flashlight and your eyes.

Step 10: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Close the radiator drain (or reinstall the lower hose) using hose clamp pliers.
  • Mix Dex-Cool coolant and distilled water to a 50/50 mix (unless you purchased pre-mixed coolant).
  • Fill the coolant reservoir slowly using a funnel.
  • Start the engine and set the heater to HOT with the fan on low.
  • Let it idle and watch the temperature gauge. Add coolant as the level drops.
  • When the engine reaches operating temp and you feel steady heat from the vents, reinstall the reservoir cap.

✅ After Repair

  • With the engine running, inspect the water pump area for leaks using safety glasses and good lighting.
  • Take a short test drive, then re-check for leaks and confirm the temperature stays normal.
  • After the engine cools completely, recheck the coolant level in the reservoir and top off if needed.
  • If you notice overheating, gurgling, or no cabin heat, there may be trapped air—repeat the bleed/top-off process.
