🔧 RAV4 - Water Pump Replacement
The water pump moves coolant through your engine to prevent overheating. On your RAV4, it’s driven by the serpentine belt, so you’ll drain coolant, remove the belt from the pump pulley, swap the pump, then refill and bleed air.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2.0–4.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine; wait until fully cool.
- ⚠️ Support the RAV4 with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack.
- ⚠️ Coolant is toxic—keep away from kids/pets and clean spills fast.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers/tools clear of the belt path while rotating the tensioner.

- Serpentine belt (if worn/cracked) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- Let the engine cool completely (upper radiator hose should feel cool).
- Set your drain pan under the radiator area before opening the drain.
- Take a quick photo of the belt routing.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift the right-front and remove the wheel
- Use a 21mm socket to loosen the right-front lug nuts slightly.
- Use a floor jack to lift at the proper jacking point, then set the vehicle onto jack stands.
- Remove the lug nuts with the 21mm socket and remove the wheel.
Step 2: Remove the right-front splash shield (access panel)
- Use a trim clip removal tool to remove plastic clips.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove any small bolts, then pull the splash shield section out.
Step 3: Drain the coolant
- Put the drain pan under the radiator drain cock area.
- Slowly remove the radiator cap by hand (only if stone cold).
- Open the radiator drain cock and let coolant drain fully into the drain pan.
Step 4: Loosen the water pump pulley bolts (before removing the belt)
- At the water pump pulley, use a 10mm socket to crack loose the pulley bolts while the belt is still tight.
- This prevents the pulley from spinning.
Step 5: Release serpentine belt tension and remove the belt from the pump
- Locate the belt tensioner and place a 19mm box wrench on the tensioner arm/hex.
- Rotate the tensioner to relieve tension, then slide the belt off the water pump pulley.
- Slowly let the tensioner return to its resting position (don’t let it snap back).
Step 6: Remove the water pump pulley
- Remove the loosened pulley bolts using a 10mm socket, then remove the pulley.
- When reinstalling later: Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lb).
Step 7: Remove the water pump
- Place the drain pan under the pump area—more coolant will spill.
- Use a 10mm socket (and extensions as needed) to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
- Pull the pump straight off. If it’s stuck, tap gently with the palm of your hand—do not pry hard on the sealing surface.
Step 8: Clean the mating surface
- Use a plastic razor scraper and shop towels to remove old gasket material without gouging the aluminum.
- Finish with brake cleaner spray on a towel to leave the surface clean and dry.
Step 9: Install the new water pump and gasket
- Install the new gasket/O-ring onto the new pump (match the original orientation).
- Position the pump and start all bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten evenly in a crisscross pattern using a 10mm socket.
- Final tighten with a torque wrench (in-lb): Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lb).
Step 10: Reinstall the pulley and belt
- Install the pulley and thread the bolts by hand, then tighten with a 10mm socket.
- Final tighten with a torque wrench (in-lb): Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lb).
- Route the belt using your photo/under-hood diagram.
- Use the 19mm box wrench to rotate the tensioner, slip the belt onto the last pulley, then slowly release.
- Visually confirm the belt is fully seated in every pulley groove.
Step 11: Reinstall splash shield and wheel
- Reinstall the splash shield using the 10mm socket and trim clip removal tool (for clips).
- Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten lug nuts.
- Lower the vehicle, then tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a 21mm socket.
Step 12: Refill and bleed the cooling system
- Close the radiator drain cock.
- Use a funnel to fill the radiator with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink) premix until full.
- Fill the coolant reservoir to the “FULL” line.
- Start the engine and let it idle with the radiator cap off. Add coolant as the level drops.
- As the engine warms up, watch for air bubbles and keep topping off.
- When bubbles slow down and the level stabilizes, install the radiator cap.
âś… After Repair
- Let the engine reach normal temperature, then verify the heater blows hot.
- Check for leaks around the water pump and underneath the RAV4.
- After the first drive and full cool-down, recheck the reservoir level and top off if needed.
- If the temperature gauge rises abnormally, shut off and re-bleed air.
