🔧 Frontier - Water Pump Replacement

On your Frontier’s 4.0L V6, the water pump sits behind the front timing cover and is driven by the timing chain. Replacing it is a major job because the front of the engine must be disassembled and resealed to prevent oil/coolant leaks.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 6-10 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Never open the radiator cap hot; coolant can spray and burn.
  • 🧯 Disconnect the negative battery cable before working near the fan/alternator.
  • 🧰 Support the truck with jack stands on the frame; never rely on a jack.
  • 🧪 Keep coolant off belts and electrical connectors; wipe spills immediately.
  • 🧼 The timing cover uses RTV sealant; sealing surfaces must be perfectly clean or it will leak.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 10-quart)
  • Funnel
  • Trim clip remover
  • Serpentine belt tool
  • Metric socket set 8mm-19mm
  • Metric wrench set 10mm-19mm
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 1/2" breaker bar
  • Torque wrench 10-80 ft-lbs
  • Torque wrench 80-250 ft-lbs
  • Harmonic balancer puller (specialty)
  • Crank pulley holding tool (specialty)
  • Plastic razor scraper
  • Gasket scraper
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Shop rags
  • Rubber mallet
  • Paint marker

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Water pump - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant (Nissan blue long-life equivalent) - Qty: 2-3 gallons (mix as required)
  • Timing cover gasket and seal set - Qty: 1
  • Front crankshaft oil seal - Qty: 1
  • RTV silicone sealant (OEM-equivalent for timing cover) - Qty: 1
  • Thermostat and gasket - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Let the engine cool completely (overnight is best).
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
  • Plan for downtime: once the timing cover is off, you shouldn’t “pause for days” because sealing surfaces can get contaminated.
  • Two quick questions so I can give you the correct torque-spec step list:
    • Are we talking about your Frontier with the standard belt-driven mechanical fan (fan clutch), or does it have an electric fan conversion?
    • Do you want “water pump only,” or do you also want to replace timing chain guides/tensioners while you’re in there?

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain the coolant

  • Place a drain pan (at least 10-quart) under the radiator drain.
  • Open the radiator cap slowly (engine cold), then open the drain cock using pliers (if needed) and drain.

Step 2: Remove the lower splash shield

  • Raise the front with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Remove clips/bolts using a trim clip remover and 10mm socket.

Step 3: Remove the intake ducting for access

  • Loosen clamps using a flathead screwdriver and remove the intake tube/air snorkel.

Step 4: Remove the fan and shroud (if equipped with mechanical fan)

  • Remove the upper shroud bolts using a 10mm socket.
  • Loosen the fan clutch nuts using metric wrenches, then lift the fan and shroud out together.
  • Take pictures before removing anything.

Step 5: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Rotate the tensioner using a serpentine belt tool and slip the belt off.

Step 6: Remove front accessories blocking the timing cover

  • Remove brackets/fasteners as needed using metric sockets 10mm-14mm.
  • Support any component you move aside so hoses/wiring are not stretched.

Step 7: Remove the crankshaft pulley

  • Hold the crank pulley using a crank pulley holding tool (specialty).
  • Remove the crank bolt using a 1/2" breaker bar and correct metric socket.
  • Pull the pulley using a harmonic balancer puller (specialty).

Step 8: Remove the front timing cover

  • Remove timing cover bolts using metric sockets 8mm-12mm.
  • Carefully break the RTV seal using a plastic razor scraper; do not gouge aluminum surfaces.
  • Clean all mating surfaces with a gasket scraper, then finish with brake cleaner spray and shop rags.

Step 9: Remove and replace the water pump

  • Remove the water pump bolts using a 10mm socket.
  • Remove the pump and old seals; clean the sealing surface using a plastic razor scraper.
  • Install the new water pump with new seals from the timing cover gasket and seal set.

Step 10: Reseal and reinstall the timing cover

  • Install a new front crankshaft oil seal as required using a rubber mallet (tap evenly).
  • Apply RTV silicone sealant (OEM-equivalent for timing cover) in the correct bead pattern, then install the cover.
  • Important: Bolt torque specs and the RTV bead pattern are critical on your Frontier—once you answer the two questions above, I’ll provide the exact torque list (by bolt group) and the proper RTV locations in the correct order.

Step 11: Reassemble the front of the engine

  • Reinstall the crank pulley and crank bolt using the crank pulley holding tool (specialty) and torque wrench 80-250 ft-lbs.
  • Reinstall brackets and accessories using metric sockets 10mm-14mm and torque wrench 10-80 ft-lbs.
  • Install the new belt using a serpentine belt tool.
  • Reinstall the fan/shroud using metric wrenches and 10mm socket (if equipped).

Step 12: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Close the radiator drain.
  • Refill with engine coolant (Nissan blue long-life equivalent) using a funnel.
  • Start the engine and let it reach operating temp with the heater on HOT, topping off as air purges.

âś… After Repair

  • Check for coolant and oil leaks around the timing cover perimeter and water pump area.
  • Verify the heater blows hot and the temperature gauge stays normal.
  • After the first full heat-soak/cool-down, recheck coolant level and top off as needed.
  • Recheck belt tracking (make sure it’s centered on every pulley).

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $1,200-$2,200 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $250-$650 (parts only)

You Save: $950-$1,550 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 6-10 hours.
