📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- Let the engine cool completely (overnight is best).
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Raise the front end with a floor jack and support with jack stands.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Drain the coolant
- Place a drain pan under the radiator drain.
- Open the radiator cap slowly (only when cold).
- Open the radiator drain cock using a flat-blade screwdriver (if needed) and drain coolant.
Step 2: Remove the radiator fan shroud
- Remove the upper shroud fasteners using a 10mm socket.
- Lift the shroud up and back as far as it will go (it will come out fully after the fan is removed).
Step 3: Remove the engine-driven fan (fan clutch)
- A “fan clutch” is the hub behind the fan that lets it freewheel when cooling demand is low.
- Remove the four fan nuts using a 12mm socket.
- Carefully lift the fan and clutch out, then remove the shroud completely.
- Reinstall later: Torque to 13 N·m (115 in-lbs)
Step 4: Remove the serpentine belt
- Rotate the belt tensioner using a 14mm socket to relieve tension.
- Slip the belt off one pulley, then release the tensioner slowly.
- Tip: Take a photo of belt routing.
Step 5: Disconnect the water pump hoses (as equipped)
- Use hose clamp pliers to slide the clamp back.
- Twist the hose gently to break it loose, then pull it off.
- Catch any remaining coolant with the drain pan.
Step 6: Unbolt and remove the water pump
- Remove the water pump mounting bolts using a 10mm socket and 3/8" extension.
- Remove the pump from the engine (tap lightly with your palm if stuck).
- Keep track of bolt locations if lengths differ.
Step 7: Clean the mating surface
- Use a plastic gasket scraper to remove old gasket material.
- Finish cleaning with brake cleaner spray and shop rags.
- Tip: Don’t gouge the aluminum surface.
Step 8: Install the new water pump and gasket
- Place the new gasket on the new pump (match all bolt holes).
- Position the pump and start all bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a 10mm socket.
- Final tighten using a 3/8" torque wrench: Torque to 21 N·m (15 ft-lbs)
Step 9: Reconnect hoses
- Push hoses fully onto their fittings, then position clamps using hose clamp pliers.
- Replace weak clamps now to prevent future leaks.
Step 10: Reinstall the serpentine belt
- Route the belt on all pulleys except one easy-to-reach pulley.
- Rotate the tensioner with a 14mm socket, slip the belt on, and release slowly.
- Visually confirm the belt ribs are seated in every pulley groove.
Step 11: Reinstall the fan and shroud
- Install the fan/clutch assembly and start the four nuts by hand.
- Tighten with a 12mm socket, then torque: Torque to 13 N·m (115 in-lbs)
- Reinstall the shroud fasteners using a 10mm socket.
Step 12: Refill and bleed the cooling system
- Lower the truck off the jack stands.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Fill the radiator with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink) premix using a funnel.
- Start the engine and set HVAC to HOT with the fan on LOW.
- Let it idle until warm; top off coolant as the level drops.
- When no more bubbles appear and heat is steady, install the radiator cap.
- Fill the overflow reservoir to the FULL line.
✅ After Repair
- Check for leaks around the pump and hose connections with the engine running.
- Road test 10–15 minutes, then recheck for leaks.
- After the engine fully cools, recheck the radiator level and overflow bottle and top off if needed.
- If the temperature gauge rises abnormally, shut down and let it cool (air may still be trapped).
