🔧 Sierra 1500 - Water Pump Replacement

The water pump circulates coolant through the engine to keep temperatures under control. On your Sierra, replacing a worn pump usually means draining some coolant, removing the drive belt, taking off the pump pulley, and swapping the pump and gasket.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool completely before opening the cooling system. Hot coolant can cause serious burns.
  • Coolant is toxic. Keep it off skin, paint, and away from pets and children.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before working near the belt and fan area.
  • Use jack stands if you raise the truck. Never rely on a jack alone.
  • Dispose of old coolant properly.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • Torque wrench
  • Serpentine belt tool or breaker bar
  • Drain pan
  • Gasket scraper
  • Plastic trim tool
  • Funnel
  • Shop towels
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Water pump - Qty: 1
  • Water pump gasket or seal - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant - Qty: 2-3 gallons
  • Thermostat gasket or sealant - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool completely.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Place a drain pan under the radiator area before opening the cooling system.
  • Take a quick photo of the belt routing first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain the coolant

  • Use a drain pan under the radiator petcock or lower hose.
  • Open the drain and remove enough coolant so the level drops below the water pump.
  • If the petcock is stuck, use a 3/8-inch drive ratchet carefully on the lower hose clamp instead.

Step 2: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool or breaker bar on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner and slip the belt off the pulleys.
  • Set the belt aside if you are reusing it, or replace it if it is cracked or glazed.

Step 3: Remove the water pump pulley

  • Use a 15mm socket to loosen the pulley bolts.
  • Hold the pulley steady while removing the bolts.
  • Remove the pulley and keep the bolts in order.

Step 4: Remove the old water pump

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the water pump bolts.
  • Remove the pump from the engine.
  • If it sticks, tap gently with a soft mallet. Do not pry on the aluminum sealing surface.

Step 5: Clean the sealing surface

  • Use a gasket scraper and shop towels to clean the engine surface.
  • Remove all old gasket material and coolant residue.
  • Keep debris out of the coolant passages.

Step 6: Install the new water pump

  • Position the new gasket or seal on the pump.
  • Set the pump in place and start all bolts by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the bolts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reinstall the pulley

  • Place the pulley on the pump hub.
  • Use a 15mm socket to install the pulley bolts.
  • Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Use the belt routing diagram or your photo to route the belt correctly.
  • Use a serpentine belt tool or breaker bar to rotate the tensioner.
  • Slip the belt onto the last pulley and make sure it sits in every groove.

Step 9: Refill the cooling system

  • Use a funnel to refill with the correct coolant mix.
  • Fill the radiator and overflow reservoir to the proper level.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable.

Step 10: Bleed air from the system

  • Start the engine and let it idle with the heater set to hot.
  • Watch coolant level and top off as the air escapes.
  • Check for leaks at the pump, hose connections, and drain point.
  • Do not open a hot cooling system.

✅ After Repair

  • Let the engine reach operating temperature and confirm the temperature stays steady.
  • Check for coolant leaks again after the first drive.
  • Recheck coolant level after the engine cools down completely.
  • If the belt squeals or tracks incorrectly, stop and recheck routing.
