🔧 Titan - Water Pump Replacement
Replacing the water pump on your Titan means draining the coolant, removing the drive belt and front cooling fan/shroud area for access, unbolting the pump, then reinstalling with a new gasket and refilling/bleeding the cooling system. This job matters because a leaking or failing pump can overheat the engine quickly.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-6 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Never open the radiator cap hot; let it cool fully first.
- ⚠️ Support the truck with jack stands; never rely on a jack.
- ⚠️ Keep hands/tools clear of the fan and belt path.
- ⚠️ Coolant is toxic; use a drain pan and clean spills immediately.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is recommended before working near the fan/shroud area.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Water pump - Qty: 1
- Water pump gasket/O-ring (as equipped) - Qty: 1
- Engine coolant (Nissan-compatible, pre-mix or concentrate + distilled water) - Qty: 3-4 gallons (enough for refill/top-off)
- Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1 (recommended while you’re in there)
- Hose clamps - Qty: 2 (only if originals are weak)
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- Let the engine cool completely (radiator hoses should feel cool).
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Quick check (needed for exact torque specs): Is your truck a standard Titan or a Titan XD?
- Quick check: Are you replacing just the pump, or the thermostat and upper/lower radiator hoses too?
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise the front and remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)
- Use floor jack to lift the front and set it on jack stands.
- Remove any lower engine splash shield/undercover fasteners using a trim clip removal tool and 10mm socket.
Step 2: Drain the coolant
- Place a drain pan under the radiator drain.
- Slowly loosen the radiator cap (only if fully cool) by hand, then open the drain cock using a flat-blade screwdriver if needed.
- If there’s no usable drain, remove the lower radiator hose with hose clamp pliers.
Step 3: Remove the intake ducting (for working room)
- Loosen hose clamps with a flat-blade screwdriver or 8mm socket.
- Remove the duct and set it aside.
Step 4: Remove the fan shroud and engine cooling fan
- Unclip/remove the upper shroud fasteners using a trim clip removal tool and 10mm socket.
- Remove the fan/clutch assembly (if equipped) using the appropriate wrench set (8mm-19mm).
- Tip: Take a photo before removal.
- Torque to XX Nm (YY ft-lbs)
Step 5: Remove the serpentine belt
- Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 1/2" drive breaker bar to rotate the belt tensioner and slip the belt off.
- If reusing the belt, note routing or take a picture.
Step 6: Remove components blocking the water pump
- Remove any brackets, hoses, or the idler pulley (if it blocks access) using a socket set (8mm-19mm).
- Release hose clamps with hose clamp pliers and move hoses aside (expect some coolant spill).
- Torque to XX Nm (YY ft-lbs)
Step 7: Remove the water pump
- Remove the water pump mounting bolts using a socket set (8mm-19mm) and 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Carefully pull the pump straight off. If stuck, gently tap by hand—do not pry hard on the aluminum surfaces.
- Note bolt locations if different lengths are used.
- Torque to XX Nm (YY ft-lbs)
Step 8: Clean the sealing surface
- Use a plastic razor blade scraper and gasket scraper to remove old gasket material.
- Wipe clean using brake cleaner spray and shop towels.
- Tip: Keep debris out of the engine.
Step 9: Install the new water pump
- Install the new gasket/O-ring on the new pump.
- Position the pump and hand-start all bolts to prevent cross-threading.
- Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a torque wrench (10-150 ft-lbs range).
- Torque to XX Nm (YY ft-lbs)
Step 10: Reinstall removed parts and the belt
- Reinstall brackets/hoses using a socket set (8mm-19mm) and hose clamp pliers.
- Route the belt and apply tension using a serpentine belt tool (specialty).
- Reinstall the fan and shroud using a 10mm socket and wrench set (8mm-19mm).
- Torque to XX Nm (YY ft-lbs)
Step 11: Refill and bleed the cooling system
- Close the radiator drain.
- Refill coolant slowly using a funnel.
- Start the engine and let it reach operating temperature with the heater set to HOT.
- Top off as air burps out; watch the temperature gauge closely.
✅ After Repair
- Check for leaks around the pump and hoses with the engine running.
- Verify the heater blows hot and the temperature gauge stays normal.
- After a full cool-down, recheck the coolant level and top off as needed.
- Dispose of old coolant properly (do not dump it).
