  • On 4WD trucks, work with enough clearance to reach the lower pulley area safely.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully before opening the cooling system.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Raise the front of the truck if you need more access to the lower front engine area.
  • Place a drain pan under the radiator drain or lower hose.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain the coolant

  • Use a drain pan under the radiator.
  • Open the radiator drain or remove the lower radiator hose clamp and drain enough coolant to get the level below the water pump.
  • Keep coolant off belts.

Step 2: Remove the engine cover and intake ducting

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove any engine cover fasteners if equipped.
  • Remove the intake ducting if it blocks access to the fan shroud or belt area.

Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use the serpentine belt tool on the tensioner to relieve belt tension.
  • Slip the belt off the water pump pulley and carefully release the tensioner.
  • Inspect the belt for cracks or glazing before reuse.

Step 4: Remove the fan assembly and shroud

  • Use a 15mm socket and wrench to remove the fan clutch fasteners if equipped with a mechanical fan setup.
  • Lift the fan and shroud out carefully. This may take some maneuvering.
  • Watch the radiator fins.

Step 5: Remove the water pump pulley

  • Use an 18mm socket to remove the pulley bolts while holding the pulley steady.
  • Remove the pulley from the water pump.

Step 6: Remove the water pump

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the water pump bolts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Remove the pump from the engine block.
  • If it sticks, tap gently with a soft mallet. Do not pry against sealing surfaces.
  • Clean the mating surface with a gasket scraper until it is smooth and dry.

Step 7: Install the new water pump

  • Install the new gasket on the pump. Use a small amount of coolant-safe sealant only if the gasket manufacturer specifies it.
  • Set the pump in place and start all bolts by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
  • Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall the pulley, fan, and belt

  • Install the water pump pulley and start the bolts by hand.
  • Use an 18mm socket to tighten the pulley bolts.
  • Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • Reinstall the fan and shroud, then reinstall the serpentine belt using the belt tool.
  • Make sure the belt is seated in every pulley groove.

Step 9: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Use a funnel to refill with the correct coolant mix.
  • Bleed air from the system per the truck’s cooling system fill procedure.
  • Install the radiator cap only after the level stabilizes and air is purged.
  • Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs) if your bleed screw uses a small cap or screw fastener.

Step 10: Check for leaks and verify operation

  • Reconnect the battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Watch for leaks at the pump, hose connections, and drain point.
  • Check that coolant begins circulating as the engine warms up.

  • Top off coolant again after the first heat cycle.
  • Recheck for leaks after a short test drive.
  • Watch the temperature gauge for normal operation.
  • If the old pump failed from bearing noise or contamination, inspect the belt and tensioner closely.
