🔧 Pathfinder - Radiator Hose Replacement

Replacing a radiator hose means draining some coolant, removing the old hose, and installing a new one with good clamps so the cooling system can hold pressure. A cracked or soft hose can leak or burst and cause overheating, so it’s important to fix it right away.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine; hot coolant can spray and burn you.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands before going underneath.
  • ⚠️ Keep coolant away from kids/pets; it’s poisonous and tastes sweet.
  • ⚠️ Use gloves and safety glasses; coolant is an irritant.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 10-quart)
  • Funnel
  • Pliers
  • Hose clamp pliers (specialty)
  • Pick tool
  • Utility knife
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Torque wrench (5-60 Nm range)
  • Trim clip remover
  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Upper radiator hose - Qty: 1
  • Lower radiator hose - Qty: 1
  • Hose clamps - Qty: 2-4
  • Nissan Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant (blue) premix - Qty: 1-2 gallons
  • Distilled water - Qty: 1 gallon

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Let the engine cool fully (at least 2-3 hours).
  • Set the HVAC temperature to full hot during bleeding later; this helps move coolant through the heater core.
  • Take a photo of hose routing first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)

  • Raise the front of your Pathfinder using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support it with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Use a trim clip remover and 10mm socket with a ratchet to remove the clips/bolts holding the lower splash shield.

Step 2: Relieve pressure safely

  • Place shop towels around the radiator cap area.
  • Slowly open the radiator cap only when the engine is completely cool.

Step 3: Drain enough coolant

  • Place a drain pan (at least 10-quart) under the radiator drain.
  • Open the drain using a flathead screwdriver (if slotted) and drain until the coolant level is below the hose you’re replacing.
  • If your drain uses hand-turn only, use pliers gently only if needed (don’t crush it).

Step 4: Remove the upper radiator hose (radiator to engine)

  • Use hose clamp pliers (specialty) or pliers to compress the spring clamp and slide it back on the hose.
  • Twist the hose to break it loose. If it’s stuck, carefully work around the edge with a pick tool. (A pick tool is a small hook tool used to gently separate stuck rubber.)
  • Pull the hose off the radiator neck, then off the engine neck.
  • If it will not come off, use a utility knife to slit the hose lengthwise near the end and peel it off. Cut the hose, not the plastic neck.

Step 5: Remove the lower radiator hose (radiator to engine)

  • Reposition the drain pan (at least 10-quart) under the lower hose area; more coolant will spill.
  • Use hose clamp pliers (specialty) to move both clamps back.
  • Twist and remove the hose from each end. Use the pick tool if needed.

Step 6: Prep the fittings and install the new hose(s)

  • Wipe the radiator and engine hose necks clean using shop towels.
  • Slide the new hose clamps onto the new hose before installing it.
  • Push the hose fully onto each neck until it bottoms out (you should feel it “seat”).
  • Position spring clamps behind the raised bead on the neck using hose clamp pliers (specialty). (That bead prevents the hose from blowing off.)
  • If using worm-gear clamps, tighten with a flathead screwdriver until snug; do not crush the radiator neck.

Step 7: Reinstall the splash shield

  • Reinstall the lower splash shield using a 10mm socket and ratchet, plus a trim clip remover for clips.
  • If you have a torque spec available for your fasteners, use a torque wrench (5-60 Nm range); otherwise tighten snug (do not strip plastic).

Step 8: Refill coolant

  • Close the radiator drain snugly.
  • Use a funnel to refill with Nissan Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant (blue) premix.
  • If you used concentrate, mix with distilled water to a 50/50 blend before filling.

Step 9: Bleed air from the cooling system

  • Start the engine and let it idle with the radiator cap off.
  • Set the heater to maximum heat and fan on medium.
  • As the engine warms up, watch coolant level and add as needed using a funnel.
  • Once the thermostat opens (upper hose gets hot), you may see bubbles; keep topping up until bubbles reduce.
  • Install the radiator cap once the level stabilizes.
  • Let it reach normal temperature and check for leaks at both ends of each hose using safety glasses.

Step 10: Top off the reservoir

  • With the engine off and cooling down, fill the overflow reservoir to the “MAX” line using a funnel.
  • After your first drive and full cool-down, recheck the reservoir and top off if needed.

✅ After Repair

  • Check carefully for leaks at every clamp with the engine hot and running.
  • Make sure the heater blows hot air; weak heat can mean air is still trapped.
  • Watch the temperature gauge on the first 2-3 drives; pull over if it rises above normal.
  • Dispose of old coolant properly (sealed container; take to a recycling center/auto parts store).
