🔧 Tucson - Radiator Hose Replacement

On your Tucson, the radiator hoses carry coolant between the engine and radiator. Replacing a leaking, swollen, or cracked hose is important because a sudden hose failure can overheat the engine fast.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine—hot coolant can spray and burn you.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands if you go underneath (don’t rely on a jack alone).
  • ⚠️ Coolant is toxic—keep away from kids/pets and clean spills immediately.
  • ⚠️ If you remove the lower hose, expect a large coolant dump—use a big drain pan.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 10-quart)
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 6" extension (3/8" drive)
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Hose clamp pliers
  • Pick tool (small hook)
  • Funnel
  • Shop rags

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Upper radiator hose - Qty: 1
  • Lower radiator hose - Qty: 1
  • Radiator hose clamps - Qty: 2
  • Hyundai-compatible P-OAT coolant (pre-mixed 50/50) - Qty: 2-3 gallons
  • Engine under cover push clips - Qty: 4

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and let the engine cool fully (at least 2 hours).
  • Put wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Decide which hose you’re replacing:
    • Upper hose = top of radiator to engine (easier).
    • Lower hose = bottom of radiator to engine (more coolant loss; usually needs under-cover removal).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Make sure the cooling system is depressurized

  • Confirm the upper radiator hose is cool to the touch.
  • Place shop rags around the radiator cap area.
  • Slowly loosen the cap (if equipped) to release any leftover pressure, then remove it.

Step 2: Raise the front (recommended for lower hose access)

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front.
  • Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) at the proper lift points.
  • Give the vehicle a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable.

Step 3: Remove the engine under cover (for lower hose)

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove plastic push clips.
  • Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet and 6" extension (3/8" drive) to remove bolts.
  • Set the under cover and hardware aside.

Step 4: Drain coolant to below the hose level

  • Place a drain pan (at least 10-quart) under the radiator.
  • If using the radiator drain cock (petcock), open it by hand or with a flathead screwdriver (turn gently—plastic can break).
  • Drain until the coolant level is below the hose you’re replacing, then close the drain cock snugly.
  • Tip: Save clean coolant only.

Step 5: Remove the old hose clamps

  • Use hose clamp pliers to squeeze the clamp tabs and slide the clamp back on the hose.
  • If your hose uses a screw-type clamp, loosen it with a flathead screwdriver.
  • (Definition) Hose clamp pliers are pliers that lock onto spring clamps so you can move them safely.

Step 6: Remove the old radiator hose

  • Twist the hose by hand to break it loose from the fittings.
  • If it’s stuck, carefully work around the edge with a pick tool (small hook) to free it.
  • Pull the hose off and aim it into the drain pan (at least 10-quart) to catch leftover coolant.
  • Do not pry hard on the radiator neck—it can crack.

Step 7: Prep the fittings and compare parts

  • Use shop rags to wipe the radiator and engine hose fittings clean.
  • Compare the new hose to the old hose (shape, length, bend angles) before installing.
  • Slide the new radiator hose clamps onto the new hose before pushing it on.

Step 8: Install the new hose

  • Push the hose fully onto each fitting until it bottoms out against the hose stop/bead.
  • Use hose clamp pliers to position spring clamps behind the bead on each connection.
  • If using screw-type clamps, tighten with a flathead screwdriver until snug (do not crush the hose).

Step 9: Reinstall the engine under cover (if removed)

  • Reinstall the under cover bolts using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Reinstall push clips using a trim clip removal tool to align them, then press them in by hand.

Step 10: Refill coolant

  • Insert a funnel and refill with Hyundai-compatible P-OAT coolant (pre-mixed 50/50).
  • Fill the radiator (if it has a cap) and also fill the coolant reservoir to the MAX line.
  • Wipe any spills with shop rags.

Step 11: Bleed air from the cooling system

  • Start the engine and set the heater to HOT.
  • Let the engine idle and watch the temperature gauge.
  • As it warms up, carefully squeeze the upper radiator hose by hand a few times to help move trapped air.
  • When the radiator fan cycles on/off at least once, shut the engine off and let it cool.
  • Recheck the coolant level and top off using the funnel as needed.
  • Tip: Low coolant after cool-down is normal.

âś… After Repair

  • Check for leaks with the engine idling: look around both hose ends and under the vehicle.
  • Test drive 10-15 minutes, then recheck for leaks again.
  • After the next full cool-down, recheck the reservoir level and top off if needed.
  • If the temperature gauge rises higher than normal, stop and shut the engine off—air may still be trapped.
