  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Drain engine oil and coolant before removing front cover parts.
  • Keep the engine at top dead center if you are servicing timing components.
  • Mark everything before removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect power and drain fluids

  • Use a 10mm wrench to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Use a drain pan to drain the engine oil and coolant.

Step 2: Remove front engine accessories

  • Use a metric socket set and breaker bar to remove the belts, pulleys, and front accessory brackets that block access.
  • Remove the harmonic balancer with a harmonic balancer puller (specialty).

Step 3: Remove the timing cover

  • Use a metric socket set to remove the timing cover bolts.
  • Carefully pry the cover loose and remove it without damaging the sealing surface.

Step 4: Set engine timing marks

  • Rotate the engine by hand with a breaker bar until the factory timing marks line up.
  • Do not force the crankshaft.

Step 5: Remove timing components

  • Use timing chain holding tools (specialty) and a metric socket set to remove the chain guides, tensioner, and timing chain.
  • Inspect the sprockets for wear before installing new parts.

Step 6: Install new timing components

  • Install the new timing chain kit and line up all timing marks exactly.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten bolts to factory specification for each fastener.

Step 7: Reassemble the front of the engine

  • Install the new timing cover gasket and front crankshaft seal.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the timing cover and balancer fasteners to factory specification.
  • Reinstall all accessories and the drive belt.

Step 8: Refill fluids and verify operation

  • Refill engine oil and coolant.
  • Reconnect the battery.
  • Start the engine and listen for abnormal chain noise.

  • Confirm smooth idle and no check engine light.
  • Recheck fluid levels after warm-up.
