How to Replace the Timing Chain on a 2015-2019 Hyundai Sonata (2.4L) (Engine: Inline 4 2.4L)
Step-by-step instructions, required tools/parts, safety tips, and timing mark setup to avoid engine damage for 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019
š§ Sonata - Timing Chain Replacement
Your Sonataās 2.4L engine uses a timing chain, not a timing belt. Replacing the timing chain is a major job because the front (timing) cover must come off and the cam/crank timing must be set perfectly to avoid serious engine damage.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 6-10 hours
Assumption: Stock 2.4L engine, no prior timing modifications.
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Let the engine cool fully before draining fluids or removing covers.
- ā ļø Support the car with jack stands on a solid, level surface; never rely on a jack.
- ā ļø Youāll remove an engine mountāsupport the engine with an engine support bar (a beam that holds the engine from above) or a properly positioned jack with a wood block.
- ā ļø Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent accidental cranking.
- ā ļø Keep hands clear when rotating the crankshaft; rotate only by hand with a socket.
- ā ļø If timing marks are set wrong, the engine may run poorly or be damagedādouble-check marks before sealing the cover.

š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
- Raise the front of the car with a floor jack and set it securely on jack stands.
- Remove the right-front wheel using a 21mm socket and remove the right splash shield with a trim clip removal tool.
- Place a drain pan and drain engine oil (and coolant if your timing cover has coolant passages).
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove top engine covers and the valve cover
- Remove the engine cover(s) by hand and/or with a 10mm socket.
- Disconnect ignition coil connectors and remove coils with a 10mm socket.
- Remove the valve cover bolts using a 10mm socket, then lift the valve cover off.
- Install the new gasket later; for reassembly: Torque to factory spec (refer to Hyundai service manual).
- Tip: Keep bolts grouped by location.
Step 2: Remove the serpentine belt and front accessories
- Relieve belt tension using a serpentine belt tool or 17mm wrench and remove the belt.
- Remove any front accessory brackets blocking the timing cover using a 12mm/14mm socket as needed.
- Set bolts aside in labeled bags.
Step 3: Support the engine and remove the right engine mount
- Install the engine support bar (specialty) across the fenders and lightly tension it to hold the engine.
- Remove the right engine mount and bracket using a 14mm/17mm socket.
- For reassembly: Torque to factory spec (refer to Hyundai service manual).
- Tip: Donāt lift the engineājust support it.
Step 4: Remove the crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer)
- Use a crank pulley holding tool (specialty) and a 1/2" breaker bar to loosen the crank bolt.
- Remove the pulley with a harmonic balancer puller (specialty).
- For reassembly: Torque to factory spec (refer to Hyundai service manual).
- Tip: Never pry hard on the pulley.
Step 5: Remove the front timing cover
- Remove timing cover bolts using a 10mm/12mm socket.
- Carefully separate the cover using a pry bar only at designated pry points.
- Clean mating surfaces with a plastic gasket scraper and brake cleaner spray.
- For reassembly: Torque to factory spec (refer to Hyundai service manual).
Step 6: Set cylinder #1 to Top Dead Center (TDC) on compression
- Rotate the engine clockwise using a 22mm socket on the crank bolt until timing marks align.
- Confirm cam timing marks line up with their reference points on the head/cover area.
- Tip: Only turn clockwise to keep chain tension correct.
Step 7: Remove the timing chain tensioner and guides
- Remove the chain tensioner bolts using a 10mm socket, then remove the tensioner.
- Remove chain guides using a 10mm/12mm socket.
- For reassembly: Torque to factory spec (refer to Hyundai service manual).
Step 8: Replace the timing chain
- Remove the old chain and install the new chain, matching the colored links to the crank and cam sprocket timing marks (per the kit instructions).
- Install new guides using a 10mm/12mm socket.
- Prime and install the new tensioner (follow tensioner pin/reset procedure included with the tensioner).
- For reassembly: Torque to factory spec (refer to Hyundai service manual).
- Tip: Triple-check colored links before releasing tensioner.
Step 9: Verify timing by hand-rotating the engine
- Rotate the crankshaft clockwise two full turns using a 22mm socket.
- Re-check that the timing marks align correctly at TDC.
- If marks donāt align, stop and correct it before sealing the cover.
Step 10: Replace the front crank seal and reseal the timing cover
- Remove the old front crank seal from the cover using a screwdriver carefully (avoid gouging).
- Press in the new seal evenly (use a suitably sized socket from your metric socket set as a driver).
- Apply OEM-style RTV to the timing cover mating surface as a continuous bead per Hyundai pattern.
- Install the timing cover and hand-start all bolts, then tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to factory spec (refer to Hyundai service manual).
Step 11: Reinstall crank pulley, engine mount, accessories, and valve cover
- Install the crank pulley and crank bolt using a torque wrench and crank pulley holding tool (specialty): Torque to factory spec (refer to Hyundai service manual).
- Reinstall the right engine mount and bracket using a 14mm/17mm socket: Torque to factory spec (refer to Hyundai service manual).
- Reinstall accessory brackets using a 12mm/14mm socket: Torque to factory spec (refer to Hyundai service manual).
- Install the serpentine belt using a serpentine belt tool or 17mm wrench.
- Install the valve cover with a new gasket using a 10mm socket: Torque to factory spec (refer to Hyundai service manual).
Step 12: Refill fluids and reconnect battery
- Install a new oil filter by hand, then refill oil using a funnel.
- Refill coolant using a funnel if drained.
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
ā After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle; listen for abnormal rattling from the timing cover area.
- Check carefully for oil leaks around the timing cover and crank seal.
- Verify coolant level after the engine warms up (top off as needed).
- Road test gently, then re-check for leaks and re-check oil level.
