🔧 Thermostat - Replacement

Your Camry uses a coolant thermostat to help the engine warm up and stay at the right operating temperature. If it sticks open or closed, you can get poor heat, overheating, or a check engine light. This job is manageable for a first-time DIYer if you work slowly and keep coolant clean.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool completely before opening the cooling system. Hot coolant can spray and burn you.
  • Your Camry is a hybrid, so make sure it is fully OFF before starting. Do not work around the engine bay with the vehicle in READY mode.
  • Disconnect the negative 12V battery terminal if you want extra safety before removing electrical connectors near the engine bay.
  • Keep coolant away from pets and children. Used coolant is toxic.
  • Use jack stands only if you lift the vehicle. Do not rely on a floor jack alone.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Extension bar
  • Torque wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Pliers
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Coolant funnel kit (specialty)
  • Shop towels
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Thermostat - Qty: 1
  • Thermostat gasket or O-ring - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant, Toyota Super Long Life coolant - Qty: 1-2 gallons
  • Radiator drain plug washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully before opening the cooling system.
  • Turn the ignition OFF and keep the car out of READY mode.
  • If you disconnect the 12V battery, save radio and clock settings first.
  • Have a clean drain pan ready so you can reuse only clean coolant, if appropriate.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain the coolant

  • Open the hood and place a drain pan under the radiator drain area.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver or your fingers to carefully open the radiator drain cock if equipped.
  • Drain enough coolant to bring the level below the thermostat housing.
  • Slow and clean beats fast and messy.

Step 2: Remove access parts

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the engine cover and any intake ducting that blocks access.
  • If needed, use pliers to release hose clamps from the air intake duct.
  • Move the ducting aside without stressing any sensors or hoses.

Step 3: Remove the thermostat housing

  • Locate the thermostat housing on the engine coolant outlet.
  • Use a 12mm socket, extension bar, and ratchet to remove the housing bolts.
  • Lift the housing straight off and note how the thermostat and gasket sit.
  • Take a quick photo before removing parts.

Step 4: Replace the thermostat

  • Remove the old thermostat and gasket or O-ring.
  • Clean the mating surface with a shop towel. Do not scratch the aluminum surface.
  • Install the new thermostat in the same direction as the old one.
  • Install the new gasket or O-ring.

Step 5: Reinstall the housing

  • Set the thermostat housing back in place by hand first.
  • Use the 12mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the bolts evenly.
  • Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect any hoses or clamps you removed.

Step 6: Reinstall removed parts

  • Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to reinstall the intake ducting and engine cover.
  • Make sure all clamps are seated and all connectors are locked in place.

Step 7: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Use a funnel or coolant funnel kit (specialty) to refill with the correct coolant.
  • Fill slowly to reduce trapped air.
  • Start the engine and let it reach operating temperature with the heater set to warm.
  • Top off coolant as the level drops.
  • Watch for bubbles as air escapes.

Step 8: Final inspection

  • Use a flashlight to check the thermostat housing and hoses for leaks.
  • Recheck coolant level after the engine cools down completely.
  • Install the radiator cap securely when the level is stable.

✅ After Repair

  • Take the car for a short test drive and watch the temperature gauge or scan data.
  • Check for coolant leaks around the thermostat housing and drain area.
  • Verify the cabin heat works normally.
  • Recheck coolant level the next day when the engine is cold.
