🔧 Thermostat - Replacement

The thermostat on your Tacoma controls how quickly the engine warms up and keeps coolant temperature stable. If it sticks open or closed, you can get poor heat, overheating, or a check engine light. This job involves draining coolant, removing the thermostat housing, and bleeding the cooling system afterward.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool completely before opening the cooling system. Hot coolant can cause serious burns.
  • Use a drain pan and keep coolant off the ground. Antifreeze is toxic to people and pets.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
  • Do not open the radiator cap on a hot engine.
  • Make sure the cooling system is fully bled after repair to avoid overheating.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Socket wrench
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • Extension bar
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Torque wrench
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Shop towels
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves
  • Jack stands
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Thermostat - Qty: 1
  • Thermostat gasket or O-ring - Qty: 1
  • Toyota Super Long Life Coolant equivalent - Qty: 2-3 gallons
  • New hose clamp if damaged - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully before starting.
  • Raise the front of the truck only if needed for access, then support it with jack stands.
  • Have the new thermostat and gasket ready before draining coolant.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain the coolant

  • Place a drain pan under the radiator drain cock.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver or pliers, depending on the drain cock style, to open the drain and lower the coolant level below the thermostat housing.
  • If needed, remove the radiator cap only after the engine is cool.
  • Drain slowly to avoid spills.

Step 2: Remove intake or access parts

  • Use a 10mm socket and socket wrench to remove any intake tube, air duct, or cover blocking access to the thermostat housing.
  • Move the parts aside carefully so you do not crack any plastic clips.

Step 3: Remove the thermostat housing

  • Locate the thermostat housing at the engine coolant outlet.
  • Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket with an extension bar to remove the housing bolts.
  • Pull the housing away gently. A small amount of coolant will spill.
  • Keep track of bolt lengths.

Step 4: Remove the thermostat

  • Lift the thermostat out of the housing or engine opening.
  • Remove the old gasket or O-ring.
  • Clean the sealing surfaces with shop towels. Do not scratch the metal surfaces.

Step 5: Install the new thermostat

  • Install the new thermostat in the same direction as the old one. The jiggle valve or bleed feature must match the original position.
  • Install the new gasket or O-ring.
  • Reinstall the housing and start the bolts by hand.
  • Use a torque wrench to torque the housing bolts to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 6: Reinstall removed intake parts

  • Use a 10mm socket to reinstall any intake tube or cover removed earlier.
  • Make sure all clamps and clips are fully seated.

Step 7: Refill the cooling system

  • Use a funnel to refill with the correct coolant mixture.
  • Fill the radiator and reservoir to the proper level.
  • Leave the radiator cap off for bleeding unless your filling setup requires otherwise.

Step 8: Bleed the air out of the system

  • Start the engine and let it idle with the heater set to full hot.
  • Watch the coolant level and top off as air escapes.
  • Let the engine reach operating temperature and confirm the upper radiator hose gets hot.
  • Install the radiator cap once bubbling stops and coolant level stabilizes.
  • Never leave the coolant low.

✅ After Repair

  • Check for leaks around the thermostat housing and hoses.
  • Verify cabin heat works normally.
  • Watch the temperature gauge on a road test.
  • Recheck coolant level after the engine cools down again.
