🔧 Thermostat - Replacement

The thermostat controls engine coolant flow so your Tacoma reaches and holds proper operating temperature. If it sticks closed, the engine can overheat; if it sticks open, warm-up is slow and heater output drops.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool completely before opening the cooling system. Hot coolant can spray and burn you.
  • Use eye protection and gloves. Coolant is toxic and slippery.
  • Keep the coolant away from pets and children.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
  • Use a drain pan and clean spills immediately.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Torque wrench
  • Flat blade screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Shop towels
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Thermostat - Qty: 1
  • Thermostat gasket or seal - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant - Qty: 1-2 gallons

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully.
  • Open the hood and remove the engine cover if equipped.
  • Put a drain pan under the radiator drain area.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain the coolant

  • Use a drain pan under the radiator.
  • Open the radiator drain cock carefully and drain enough coolant so the level drops below the thermostat housing.
  • Close the drain cock after draining.
  • Go slow to avoid a mess.

Step 2: Remove access parts

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the engine cover, intake ducting, or any brackets blocking access to the thermostat housing.
  • Move hoses and clamps aside as needed with pliers and a flat blade screwdriver.

Step 3: Remove the thermostat housing

  • Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket with a ratchet and short extension to remove the thermostat housing bolts.
  • Pull the housing straight off and catch any remaining coolant in the drain pan.
  • Remove the old thermostat and gasket or seal.

Step 4: Install the new thermostat

  • Install the new thermostat in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Install the new gasket or seal.
  • Make sure the mating surfaces are clean and dry before reassembly.
  • Do not reuse a damaged seal.

Step 5: Reinstall the housing

  • Set the housing back in place and start the bolts by hand.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts evenly.
  • Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 6: Reassemble removed parts

  • Reinstall any hoses, intake ducting, brackets, and the engine cover using the 10mm socket and screwdriver as needed.
  • Make sure every clamp is seated fully.

Step 7: Refill the cooling system

  • Use a funnel to refill with the correct Toyota-compatible coolant.
  • Fill slowly to reduce trapped air.
  • Set the heater to HOT and the fan to LOW.

Step 8: Bleed air from the system

  • Start the engine and let it idle with the radiator cap off if your fill neck design allows it.
  • Watch for the coolant level to drop and top it off as air comes out.
  • Once the thermostat opens, you should feel the upper hose get hot and the coolant level may drop again.
  • Install the cap when the level stabilizes.

✅ After Repair

  • Check for coolant leaks at the housing, hoses, and drain cock.
  • Verify the engine reaches normal temperature without overheating.
  • Confirm the heater blows warm air.
  • Recheck coolant level after a full heat cycle and again the next day.
