🔧 Escalade - Thermostat Replacement

The thermostat controls coolant flow to help your engine warm up quickly and then stay at the correct operating temperature. On your Escalade, the thermostat sits in the coolant outlet housing at the front of the engine; replacing it usually means draining some coolant, removing the inlet duct, and swapping the thermostat/housing seal.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Never open the coolant cap on a hot engine; hot coolant can spray out and burn you.
  • ⚠️ Support the SUV with jack stands if you lift it; never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Keep coolant off belts and pulleys; it can cause squealing/slipping.
  • ⚠️ Coolant is toxic to people and pets—use a drain pan and clean spills immediately.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not usually required for this job, but keep tools clear of the battery terminals.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Wheel chocks
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Drain pan (at least 3-gallon)
  • Funnel
  • Shop towels
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • Socket set 7mm, 8mm, 10mm, 13mm
  • Extension set 3" and 6"
  • Torque wrench (5-60 Nm range)
  • Hose clamp pliers

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Thermostat (engine coolant thermostat) - Qty: 1
  • Thermostat housing seal / gasket - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant (DEX-COOL compatible) - Qty: 2-3 gallons
  • Distilled water - Qty: 1-2 gallons

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and install wheel chocks.
  • Let the engine cool fully (ideally sit overnight).
  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Place a drain pan under the radiator drain area before you open anything.
  • Tip: Take photos as you remove clamps/ducting.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Relieve any residual pressure (engine cold)

  • Slowly loosen the coolant surge tank cap by hand to make sure there is no pressure, then remove it.
  • If you hear hissing, stop and wait until it’s fully cooled.

Step 2: Raise the front (optional but helps access)

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front at a safe jacking point.
  • Set the SUV onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) and gently shake-test for stability.

Step 3: Drain coolant to below thermostat level

  • Position the drain pan (at least 3-gallon) under the radiator drain.
  • Open the drain using a flat-blade screwdriver if equipped, and drain until flow slows.
  • If your drain valve is hard to reach, you can drain by loosening the lower radiator hose clamp using hose clamp pliers and carefully cracking the hose loose.
  • Hose clamp pliers pinch spring clamps safely.

Step 4: Remove the air intake ducting to access the front of the engine

  • Loosen the intake duct clamps using a 7mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Disconnect any duct clips/retainers using a trim clip removal tool.
  • Lift the ducting out and set it aside where it won’t get dirty.

Step 5: Locate the thermostat housing

  • Follow the upper radiator hose to the front of the engine; it connects to the thermostat housing/water outlet area.
  • Place shop towels underneath to catch spills.

Step 6: Disconnect the hose(s) from the thermostat housing

  • Use hose clamp pliers to release the clamp, then slide the clamp back on the hose.
  • Twist the hose by hand to break it free, then pull it off carefully.
  • Tip: Twist first—don’t pry on plastic fittings.

Step 7: Remove the thermostat housing bolts

  • Remove the housing bolts using a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet and an extension set 3" and 6" as needed.
  • Lift the housing off slowly; more coolant will spill, so keep the drain pan positioned.

Step 8: Replace the thermostat and seal

  • Remove the old thermostat and old seal/gasket.
  • Clean the mating surfaces with shop towels (no gouging). The surfaces must be clean and dry.
  • Install the new thermostat and a new seal/gasket in the same orientation as removed.

Step 9: Reinstall the housing and torque bolts

  • Start all bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten evenly using a 10mm socket.
  • Final tighten with a torque wrench (5-60 Nm range): Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 10: Reconnect hoses and reinstall the intake duct

  • Push the hose fully onto the housing fitting, then position the clamp correctly using hose clamp pliers.
  • Reinstall the intake ducting and tighten clamps using a 7mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.

Step 11: Refill coolant

  • Mix DEX-COOL compatible coolant with distilled water as directed on the coolant label (many are 50/50 pre-mix—verify before mixing).
  • Refill slowly at the surge tank using a funnel until it reaches the proper level.

Step 12: Bleed air and verify heat

  • Start the engine and set HVAC to HOT with the fan at medium.
  • Let it idle and watch the temperature gauge; add coolant as the level drops (use a funnel).
  • Once the upper radiator hose gets hot and the cabin heat is strong, reinstall the surge tank cap.
  • Shut the engine off and let it cool completely, then recheck and top off if needed.

✅ After Repair

  • Check for leaks around the thermostat housing and hose connections with the engine idling.
  • Verify the heater blows hot and the temperature gauge stays normal on a 10-15 minute test drive.
  • After a full cool-down, recheck the surge tank level and top off if needed.
  • Dispose of old coolant properly (do not pour onto the ground).
