🔧 Forte - Thermostat Replacement

On your Forte, the thermostat controls coolant flow to keep engine temperature stable. Replacing it usually means draining some coolant, removing the thermostat housing at the front/lower side of the engine, swapping the thermostat/O-ring, then refilling and bleeding air.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Never open the coolant reservoir/cap on a hot engine—scalding coolant can spray out.
  • ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands if you raise it—never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Coolant is toxic—keep away from kids/pets and dispose of it properly.
  • ⚠️ Keep coolant off drive belts and electrical connectors.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required, but keep tools away from the positive terminal.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Wheel chocks
  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Drain pan (at least 8 liters)
  • Funnel
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 3/8" torque wrench (5–60 Nm range)
  • 3" and 6" extensions (3/8" drive)
  • Hose clamp pliers
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Plastic trim clip tool
  • Plastic gasket scraper
  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine thermostat - Qty: 1
  • Thermostat seal/O-ring (or thermostat gasket) - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant (Hyundai/Kia long-life P-OAT, prediluted) - Qty: 2 gallons
  • Hose clamp (matching size, if existing clamp is weak) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and let the engine cool fully (overnight is best).
  • Set the cabin heat to HOT before you start (helps purge air later).
  • Plan to catch and reuse clean coolant only if it’s fresh and uncontaminated; otherwise replace it.
  • If you need more room, raise the front and support it with jack stands.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Relieve pressure safely

  • With the engine cold, place a drain pan under the front of the car.
  • Slowly loosen the coolant reservoir cap by hand to release any leftover pressure, then remove it.

Step 2: Drain coolant to below thermostat level

  • If you raised the car, confirm it’s stable on jack stands and the rear wheels are chocked with wheel chocks.
  • Remove the lower splash shield access (if equipped) using a plastic trim clip tool and flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Open the radiator drain (petcock) and drain into the drain pan. If your Forte doesn’t have an easy drain, loosen the lower radiator hose clamp instead using hose clamp pliers and carefully crack the hose loose.

Step 3: Access the thermostat housing

  • Open the hood and remove the air intake snorkel/ducting as needed using a 10mm socket and flat-blade screwdriver (hose clamp screw).
  • Follow the lower radiator hose to the engine—on your Forte, the thermostat sits in the water inlet/housing where this hose meets the engine.
  • Tip: Take a photo before removing hoses.

Step 4: Remove the lower radiator hose from the housing

  • Use hose clamp pliers to slide the clamp back on the hose.
  • Twist the hose by hand to break it free, then pull it off. Catch any remaining coolant with the drain pan and shop towels.

Step 5: Remove the thermostat housing

  • Remove the thermostat housing bolts using a 10mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and extension.
  • Separate the housing carefully—do not pry hard against aluminum surfaces.
  • Remove the thermostat and the seal/O-ring.

Step 6: Clean the mating surfaces

  • Use a plastic gasket scraper and shop towels to clean the housing and engine mating surfaces.
  • Do not gouge the aluminum. The surface should be clean and dry.

Step 7: Install the new thermostat and seal

  • Install the new seal/O-ring onto the new thermostat (or onto the housing, depending on design).
  • Install the thermostat in the same orientation as removed (spring side goes toward the engine).
  • Reinstall the housing and hand-start the bolts to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten bolts evenly, then torque with a 3/8" torque wrench: Torque to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect hose and reassemble

  • Reinstall the lower radiator hose and position the clamp using hose clamp pliers.
  • Reinstall the intake ducting using a 10mm socket and flat-blade screwdriver.
  • If removed, reinstall the splash shield using a plastic trim clip tool.

Step 9: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Using a funnel, refill the reservoir with Hyundai/Kia long-life P-OAT coolant to the MAX line.
  • Start the engine and let it idle with the cap off. Keep the heater set to HOT.
  • As the engine warms up, add coolant as the level drops.
  • Once the upper radiator hose gets hot, the thermostat has opened. Let it idle a few more minutes, watching for bubbles.
  • Install the reservoir cap and shut the engine off. Let it cool completely, then recheck and top off to MAX.

✅ After Repair

  • Look closely for leaks around the thermostat housing and the lower radiator hose connection.
  • Verify the temperature gauge stays normal during a 10–15 minute drive.
  • After the engine cools again, recheck coolant level and top off if needed.
  • If you had overheating, confirm the radiator fan cycles on and off normally.
