🔧 Thermostat - Replacement

The thermostat on your Equinox is part of the engine cooling system and controls when coolant starts flowing to the radiator. A stuck thermostat can cause overheating, poor heater performance, or slow warm-up. This job involves draining some coolant, removing the thermostat housing, and refilling and bleeding the system.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool completely before opening the cooling system.
  • Never remove the coolant cap when the engine is hot. Pressurized hot coolant can cause serious burns.
  • Use jack stands if you raise the vehicle. Do not rely on a jack alone.
  • Keep coolant away from children and pets.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Metric socket set
  • Ratchet
  • Extension bar
  • Torque wrench
  • Pliers
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Catch bottle or clean container
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Shop towels
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Jack stands

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Thermostat assembly - Qty: 1
  • Thermostat housing gasket or seal - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant - Qty: 1-2 gallons
  • Upper radiator hose clamp - Qty: 1 if damaged

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully.
  • Set the heater to full hot before draining the coolant.
  • If the front of the vehicle needs to be raised, support it securely with jack stands.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain enough coolant

  • Place a drain pan under the radiator drain area.
  • Open the coolant reservoir cap slowly.
  • Drain enough coolant to get the level below the thermostat housing.
  • Catch and reuse clean coolant only.

Step 2: Remove intake ducting if needed

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver or the correct socket to remove the air inlet duct or snorkel if it blocks access.
  • Set the parts aside in order.

Step 3: Remove the thermostat housing

  • Locate the thermostat housing at the engine coolant outlet.
  • Use the correct metric socket and ratchet to remove the housing bolts.
  • Carefully pull the housing away and remove the old thermostat and seal.
  • Wipe the mating surfaces clean with shop towels.

Step 4: Install the new thermostat

  • Install the new thermostat and new seal in the correct orientation.
  • Make sure the seal is seated evenly all the way around.
  • Install the housing by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the housing bolts to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 5: Reinstall removed intake parts

  • Put the air ducting back in place.
  • Use the flat-blade screwdriver or correct socket to secure all clamps and fasteners.

Step 6: Refill the cooling system

  • Use a funnel to refill the system with the correct engine coolant.
  • Fill the reservoir to the proper mark.
  • Leave the cap off for the initial bleed.

Step 7: Bleed air from the system

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Set the HVAC to hot and the blower to low.
  • Watch the coolant level and add as needed.
  • Let the engine reach operating temperature.
  • When the upper hose gets hot and cabin heat is steady, install the reservoir cap.
  • Top off slowly to avoid air pockets.

Step 8: Check for leaks

  • Inspect the thermostat housing, hoses, and reservoir for leaks.
  • Use a flashlight and shop towels to check for drips.
  • Shut the engine off and let it cool.

✅ After Repair

  • Recheck coolant level after the engine cools completely.
  • Drive the vehicle and confirm normal operating temperature.
  • Check the heater output and look for any warning lights.
  • Reinspect for coolant leaks the next day.
