🔧 Thermostat - Replacement

The thermostat on your Prius controls how quickly the engine reaches and holds operating temperature. If it sticks open or closed, you can get poor cabin heat, overheating, or hybrid efficiency problems. This job involves draining some coolant, removing the thermostat housing, and refilling and bleeding the cooling system carefully.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work only on a completely cool engine. Hot coolant can cause severe burns.
  • Make sure the car is powered off and cannot enter READY mode while you work.
  • Do not open the coolant reservoir cap when the system is hot.
  • Keep coolant away from pets and children; it is toxic.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.
  • Dispose of old coolant properly; do not pour it on the ground.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Torque wrench
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Shop towels
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Thermostat - Qty: 1
  • Thermostat gasket or O-ring - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant (Toyota Super Long Life Coolant or equivalent pink hybrid coolant) - Qty: 1-2 gallons

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool completely.
  • Turn the car fully off and keep the key fob away from the vehicle.
  • Raise the front of the car only if needed for access, then support it with jack stands.
  • Have a drain pan ready before opening any coolant drain point.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drain the coolant

  • Use a drain pan under the radiator drain area and open the drain cock slowly.
  • Drain enough coolant to bring the level below the thermostat housing.
  • Close the drain cock after draining.
  • Go slow to avoid spills.

Step 2: Remove access components

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the air cleaner assembly or any intake ducting blocking access to the thermostat housing.
  • If needed, use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen hose clamps.
  • Set all fasteners aside in order.

Step 3: Remove the thermostat housing

  • Use a 12mm socket, ratchet, and short extension to remove the thermostat housing bolts.
  • Pull the housing away carefully and catch any remaining coolant.
  • Remove the old thermostat and gasket or O-ring.
  • Note the thermostat orientation before removal.

Step 4: Install the new thermostat

  • Install the new thermostat in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Install the new gasket or O-ring and make sure it seats evenly.
  • Reinstall the housing by hand first.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the housing bolts to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 5: Reassemble removed parts

  • Reinstall the intake ducting or air cleaner assembly using a 10mm socket and flat-blade screwdriver if needed.
  • Make sure all clamps are snug and all hoses are fully seated.

Step 6: Refill the cooling system

  • Use a funnel to refill the system with the correct engine coolant.
  • Fill the reservoir to the proper mark.
  • Bleed trapped air by letting the system cycle and topping off as needed.
  • Air pockets can cause overheating.

Step 7: Check for leaks and proper operation

  • Start the car and let it reach operating temperature.
  • Use a shop towel to inspect the thermostat housing for leaks.
  • Verify the cabin heat works and the engine temperature stays normal.

✅ After Repair

  • Recheck coolant level after the engine cools completely.
  • Inspect again the next day for any coolant seepage.
  • If the temperature warning light comes on, shut the car off and recheck coolant level and air bleeding.
