🔧 Maxima - Thermostat Replacement

Your Maxima’s thermostat regulates engine temperature by controlling coolant flow. If it sticks closed, you can overheat; if it sticks open, you may get low heat and poor fuel economy. This job involves draining some coolant, replacing the thermostat (and seal), then refilling and bleeding air out of the cooling system.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine; hot coolant can spray and burn you.
  • ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Coolant is toxic to people and pets—catch every drop and dispose of it properly.
  • ⚠️ Keep hands clear of the cooling fans; they can turn on unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep tools away from the positive terminal.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Drain pan (at least 3-gallon)
  • Funnel
  • Shop towels
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive extension set
  • Torque wrench (inch-lb)
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Hose clamp pliers
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Pliers
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine thermostat - Qty: 1
  • Thermostat seal / O-ring (or thermostat gasket) - Qty: 1
  • Coolant (Nissan Blue 50/50 premix equivalent) - Qty: 2-3 gallons
  • Hose clamp (worm-gear or OEM spring type equivalent) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Maxima on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Let the engine cool fully (ideally overnight).
  • Plan for a clean refill: have a drain pan ready and keep pets away.
  • Take a quick photo of hose routing.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the front and access the lower splash area

  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Lift the front using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support it on jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • If equipped with a lower splash shield, remove the clips/fasteners using a trim clip removal tool, 10mm socket, and ratchet.

Step 2: Relieve pressure (only when cold)

  • Slowly remove the radiator cap using your hand and a shop towel.
  • If there is a separate coolant reservoir cap, leave it in place for now.

Step 3: Drain coolant into a pan

  • Position a drain pan (at least 3-gallon) under the radiator drain area.
  • Open the drain cock using a flat-blade screwdriver if needed (some are hand-turn).
  • Let coolant drain until the level is below the thermostat housing (you usually do not need to drain the entire system).

Step 4: Remove the intake ducting for access

  • Open the hood and remove the engine cover if it blocks access (pull upward; if it has fasteners, use a 10mm socket).
  • Loosen intake duct clamps using a flat-blade screwdriver and remove the duct as needed for working room.
  • Set clamps where you won’t lose them.

Step 5: Locate the thermostat housing and disconnect the hose

  • Find the thermostat housing at the end of the upper radiator hose on the engine side.
  • Place shop towels under the housing to catch spills.
  • Compress the spring clamp using hose clamp pliers and slide it back on the hose.
  • Twist the hose gently with pliers (light pressure) to break it loose, then pull it off.
  • Twist first—don’t pry hard on plastic.

Step 6: Remove the thermostat housing

  • Remove the housing bolts using a 10mm socket, ratchet, and extension.
  • Carefully separate the housing; more coolant will drain—keep the drain pan positioned.

Step 7: Replace the thermostat and seal

  • Remove the old thermostat and old seal/O-ring by hand.
  • Clean the mating surfaces using shop towels (no gouging).
  • Install the new thermostat in the same orientation as the original.
  • Install the new seal/O-ring (do not reuse the old one).

Step 8: Reinstall the housing and torque bolts

  • Reinstall the housing and start the bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten evenly using a 10mm socket and ratchet.
  • Final tighten with a torque wrench (inch-lb): Torque to 10 N·m (89 in-lb).

Step 9: Reconnect hose and reassemble intake

  • Push the hose fully onto the housing.
  • Reposition the clamp using hose clamp pliers.
  • Reinstall the intake ducting and tighten clamps using a flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Reinstall the engine cover (if removed).

Step 10: Refill coolant and bleed air

  • Close the radiator drain cock (hand-tight; do not over-tighten) using a flat-blade screwdriver if needed.
  • Fill the radiator slowly with coolant (Nissan Blue 50/50 premix equivalent) using a funnel.
  • Fill the reservoir to the “MAX” line.
  • Start the engine and set HVAC to full HOT, fan on low.
  • Let the engine idle and watch the temp gauge; as it warms up, coolant level may drop—top off as needed using the funnel.
  • Once the thermostat opens (upper hose gets hot), continue idling a few minutes to purge air.
  • Shut the engine off, let it cool, then recheck radiator and reservoir levels and top off.
  • Heat on hot helps purge trapped air.

✅ After Repair

  • Check for leaks around the thermostat housing and hose connection with a flashlight.
  • Test drive 10-15 minutes, then park and recheck for leaks.
  • After the engine fully cools, recheck coolant level in the reservoir and top off if needed.
  • If you get overheating, no cabin heat, or gurgling sounds, you likely still have air trapped—re-bleed the system.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
