How to Replace the Thermostat on a 2008-2020 Nissan Rogue (2.5L) (Engine: Inline 4 2.5L)
Step-by-step thermostat housing removal, tools/parts list, coolant refill & bleeding, and torque specs for 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020
🔧 Rogue - Thermostat Replacement
The thermostat controls coolant flow to keep your engine at the correct temperature. If it sticks open you may get low heat/poor fuel economy; if it sticks closed you can overheat. You’ll remove the thermostat housing at the engine end of the lower radiator hose, swap the thermostat and seal, then refill and bleed the cooling system.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
Assumption: 2.5L thermostat is in the lower hose inlet housing; torque values listed are typical for this setup—use a service manual if yours differs.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Never open the cooling system hot; let it cool fully.
- ⚠️ Coolant is toxic—use gloves, catch it in a drain pan, and clean spills.
- ⚠️ Support the Rogue with jack stands before working underneath.
- ⚠️ Keep hands/tools away from radiator fans; they can turn on unexpectedly.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Drain pan (at least 2-gallon)
- Funnel
- Shop rags
- 3/8" drive ratchet
- 3/8" drive extension set
- 10mm socket
- 12mm socket
- Hose clamp pliers
- Trim clip removal tool
- Plastic scraper
- Torque wrench (3/8" drive, 5–60 Nm range)
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine thermostat - Qty: 1
- Thermostat seal / O-ring - Qty: 1
- Nissan-compatible long-life coolant (blue) premix - Qty: 2 gallons
- Lower radiator hose clamp - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Let the engine cool completely (upper radiator hose should feel cool).
- Set the cabin HVAC to HOT (this helps purge air later).
- Position a drain pan under the radiator area before loosening anything.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise the front safely
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front jack point.
- Set the Rogue onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) at the approved support points.
- Give the vehicle a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable.
Step 2: Remove the lower engine cover (splash shield)
- Use a trim clip removal tool to pop the plastic clips.
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove any bolts.
- Set the cover and hardware aside in a small “parts pile.” Keep clips with their holes.
Step 3: Drain coolant (enough to get below the thermostat)
- Place the drain pan under the radiator drain area.
- Slowly open the radiator drain (if equipped) and let coolant drain.
- If your drain is hard to access, you can drain by loosening the lower radiator hose at the radiator end, but expect more mess.
Step 4: Locate the thermostat housing
- Find the lower radiator hose and follow it to the engine.
- The thermostat typically sits behind the hose where it meets the engine in a small metal/plastic housing (the “water inlet”).
Step 5: Remove the lower radiator hose from the thermostat housing
- Use hose clamp pliers to compress the clamp and slide it back on the hose.
- Twist the hose by hand to break it loose, then pull it off the housing.
- Have shop rags ready; more coolant will spill.
Step 6: Remove the thermostat housing
- Use a 10mm socket (or 12mm socket if equipped) with a 3/8" drive ratchet and 3/8" drive extension to remove the housing bolts.
- Pull the housing straight off. If it sticks, tap gently by hand—do not pry hard on sealing surfaces.
Step 7: Replace the thermostat and seal
- Note the thermostat orientation before removal.
- Remove the old thermostat and old seal / O-ring.
- Clean the mating surfaces using a plastic scraper and shop rags. No gouges allowed.
- Install the new thermostat in the same orientation (if it has a small “jiggle valve,” keep it at the top).
- Install the new seal / O-ring (lightly wetting it with fresh coolant helps it seat without pinching).
Step 8: Reinstall the thermostat housing
- Reinstall the housing and start bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten bolts evenly using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Final tighten using a torque wrench (a torque wrench is a tool that clicks at a set tightness): Torque to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reconnect the lower radiator hose
- Push the hose fully onto the housing.
- Use hose clamp pliers to position the clamp back in its original location.
- If the clamp is weak or rusty, replace it now.
Step 10: Reinstall the splash shield
- Reinstall the cover using the trim clip removal tool for clips and a 10mm socket for bolts.
Step 11: Refill coolant
- Lower the Rogue from the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Refill using a funnel with Nissan-compatible long-life coolant (blue) premix.
- Fill the reservoir to the correct level mark, and fill the radiator fill point if your Rogue has a radiator cap.
Step 12: Bleed air from the cooling system
- Start the engine and let it idle with the HVAC set to HOT.
- Watch the temperature gauge; it should rise normally and stabilize.
- As it warms up, carefully squeeze the upper radiator hose (with gloves) to help burp air.
- Top off coolant as the level drops. Use shop rags to catch small spills.
- When you get steady cabin heat and no more bubbles, reinstall caps securely.
✅ After Repair
- Check for leaks around the thermostat housing and hose connection with the engine running.
- Road test 10–15 minutes, then recheck for leaks.
- After the engine cools completely, recheck coolant level and top off as needed.
- If the temperature gauge climbs unusually high, shut it off and recheck for trapped air and low coolant.
