🔧 Altima - Thermostat Replacement

The thermostat controls coolant flow to help your engine reach and hold normal operating temperature. Replacing it on your Altima involves draining some coolant, removing the thermostat housing, installing the new thermostat and seal, then refilling and bleeding air from the cooling system.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a fully cold engine; hot coolant can cause severe burns.
  • ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Keep coolant off belts/alternator; wipe spills immediately.
  • ⚠️ Coolant is toxic; keep away from kids/pets and dispose properly.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Drain pan (at least 2-gallon)
  • Trim clip tool
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Hose clamp pliers
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 3" extension
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound)
  • Funnel
  • Spill-free coolant funnel kit (specialty)
  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine thermostat - Qty: 1
  • Thermostat seal / O-ring - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant (Nissan Blue equivalent premix 50/50) - Qty: 2-3 gallons
  • Lower radiator hose clamp - Qty: 1 Optional if original is weak

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and let the engine cool completely.
  • Set the HVAC temperature to full HOT (this helps coolant flow through the heater core during bleeding).
  • If you raise the front of your Altima, chock the rear wheels and place it securely on jack stands.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Relieve pressure and prep for draining

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Slowly loosen the radiator cap or reservoir cap (only if cold) to relieve any leftover pressure.
  • Place a drain pan (at least 2-gallon) under the radiator drain area.

Step 2: Drain enough coolant

  • If needed for access, raise the front using a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) and support with jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum); use wheel chocks.
  • Open the radiator drain (petcock) and drain coolant into the drain pan (at least 2-gallon).
  • Drain until the coolant level is below the thermostat housing area, then close the drain.

Step 3: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)

  • Remove under-cover clips/fasteners using a trim clip tool, 10mm socket, and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Set the shield and clips aside in a small pile so nothing gets lost.

Step 4: Access the thermostat housing

  • Locate the thermostat housing at the engine end of the lower radiator hose.
  • Move any intake ducting out of the way as needed using a flathead screwdriver (for hose clamps) and/or a 10mm socket.
  • Tip: Take a quick photo before removing hoses.

Step 5: Remove the lower radiator hose from the housing

  • Use hose clamp pliers to compress the clamp and slide it back on the hose.
  • Twist the hose gently to break it loose, then pull it off the housing.
  • Catch any remaining coolant with the drain pan (at least 2-gallon) and wipe spills with shop towels.

Step 6: Remove the thermostat housing

  • Remove the thermostat housing bolts using a 10mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 3" extension.
  • Carefully separate the housing and remove the thermostat.
  • Remove the old thermostat seal / O-ring from its groove.

Step 7: Install the new thermostat and seal

  • Clean the housing and mating surface with shop towels (no gouging/scratching).
  • Install the new thermostat seal / O-ring into the groove.
  • Install the new engine thermostat in the same orientation as removed.
  • Reinstall the housing and hand-start the bolts to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten housing bolts evenly using a torque wrench (inch-pound): Torque to 89 in-lbs (10 Nm).

Step 8: Reconnect the hose and reassemble

  • Push the lower radiator hose fully onto the housing.
  • Position the clamp back in its original spot using hose clamp pliers.
  • Reinstall any intake ducting using a flathead screwdriver and/or 10mm socket.
  • Reinstall the splash shield using a trim clip tool, 10mm socket, and 3/8" ratchet.

Step 9: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Install a spill-free coolant funnel kit (specialty) on the radiator fill neck (or use a funnel at the reservoir if your Altima uses a pressurized tank setup).
  • Slowly add engine coolant (Nissan Blue equivalent premix 50/50) until full.
  • Start the engine and let it idle with the heater on HOT.
  • Watch for air bubbles; top off as the level drops.
  • When the radiator fan cycles and you have steady heat from vents, shut the engine off and let it cool completely.
  • After cooling, recheck coolant level and top off as needed.

✅ After Repair

  • Check for leaks around the thermostat housing and lower radiator hose with the engine running.
  • Test drive 10-15 minutes, then recheck the coolant level after a full cool-down.
  • Verify the temperature gauge stays normal and the heater works consistently.
