🔧 Thermostat - Replacement

The thermostat on your RAV4 controls engine coolant flow so the engine warms up quickly and stays at the correct temperature. If it sticks open or closed, you can get overheating, poor heat, or a check engine light. This job means draining some coolant, removing the thermostat housing, and installing the new thermostat and seal correctly.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work only on a completely cold engine. Hot coolant can cause severe burns.
  • Keep coolant away from pets and children. It is toxic.
  • Use jack stands if you raise the vehicle. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • Do not open the radiator cap when the engine is hot.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Metric socket set
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • Extension bar
  • Torque wrench
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Shop towels
  • Pliers

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Thermostat - Qty: 1
  • Thermostat gasket or seal - Qty: 1
  • Engine coolant (Toyota Super Long Life Coolant, pink) - Qty: 2 gallons

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully before starting.
  • Move the front of the vehicle up only if needed for access, then support it with jack stands.
  • Have a clean drain pan ready for coolant.
  • Keep rags handy for quick spills.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove access parts

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the engine cover, if equipped.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver or 10mm socket to loosen the air cleaner duct and move the intake parts out of the way if they block access to the thermostat housing.
  • Set the removed parts aside in order.

Step 2: Drain coolant

  • Place the drain pan under the radiator drain area.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver or your hand, depending on the drain valve style, to open the radiator drain cock slowly.
  • Drain enough coolant so the level is below the thermostat housing.
  • Close the drain cock after draining.

Step 3: Remove the thermostat housing

  • Locate the thermostat housing at the engine coolant outlet.
  • Use a 12mm socket, ratchet, and extension bar to remove the thermostat housing bolts.
  • Pull the housing straight off carefully. A little coolant will spill out.
  • Do not pry on the sealing surface.

Step 4: Remove the old thermostat

  • Lift out the old thermostat and old gasket or seal.
  • Note the orientation of the thermostat before removing it.
  • Clean the housing and engine mating surfaces with a clean shop towel.

Step 5: Install the new thermostat

  • Install the new thermostat in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Install the new thermostat gasket or seal.
  • Make sure the thermostat sits flat and centered.
  • Seat the seal fully before tightening.

Step 6: Reinstall the thermostat housing

  • Position the housing over the thermostat.
  • Install the bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench with a 12mm socket to tighten the thermostat housing bolts to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 7: Reassemble removed parts

  • Reinstall any intake ducting or engine cover using a 10mm socket and ratchet.
  • Make sure all clamps and fasteners are fully secured.

Step 8: Refill and bleed the cooling system

  • Use a funnel to refill with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant.
  • Fill the radiator and reservoir to the correct marks.
  • Start the engine with the heater set to hot and the fan on low.
  • Let the engine idle until warm while watching coolant level and looking for air bubbles.
  • Add coolant as the level drops.

✅ After Repair

  • Check for leaks at the thermostat housing and drain cock.
  • Verify the temperature gauge reaches normal and stays steady.
  • Confirm you have cabin heat.
  • After a full heat cycle and cool-down, recheck coolant level in the reservoir and top off if needed.
