🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the front and remove the lower engine cover

• Use a floor jack to lift the front jacking point, then set the car on jack stands.
• Use a trim clip removal tool and 10mm socket to remove the fasteners for the lower engine cover (undertray), then set it aside.

Step 2: Drain coolant from the radiator

• Place a drain pan under the radiator drain (lower corner of the radiator).
• Slowly remove the radiator cap by hand (only when cool).
• Open the radiator drain cock by hand; if tight, use slip-joint pliers gently.
• Let coolant drain until the flow slows to a drip, then close the drain cock by hand (snug only).

Step 3: Access the thermostat housing (water inlet)

• The thermostat sits in the water inlet where the lower radiator hose connects to the engine.
• Use a flashlight to locate the hose connection and the small housing held by bolts.
• If the air intake duct/box blocks access, remove it using a 10mm socket and ratchet, then move it aside.
• Hose clamp pliers squeeze spring clamps safely.

Step 4: Remove the lower radiator hose from the housing

• Use hose clamp pliers to compress the spring clamp and slide it back on the hose.
• Twist the hose gently by hand to break it free, then pull it off the housing.
• Catch any remaining coolant with the drain pan and shop towels.

Step 5: Remove the thermostat housing

• Use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and 3" extension to remove the thermostat housing bolts.
• Pull the housing straight off. If it sticks, wiggle it by hand—do not pry hard on the sealing surface.

Step 6: Replace the thermostat and gasket

• Remove the old thermostat and gasket/O-ring by hand.
• Clean the mating surfaces with a razor scraper and shop towels (no deep scratching).
• Install the new thermostat in the same orientation as the old one.
• Install the new gasket/O-ring (do not reuse the old one).

Step 7: Reinstall the housing and hose

• Reinstall the housing bolts by hand first (prevents cross-threading).
• Tighten bolts evenly using a 10mm socket.
• Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs) using an inch-pound torque wrench.
• Reinstall the lower radiator hose and reposition the clamp using hose clamp pliers.

Step 8: Refill coolant and bleed air

• Install a spill-free funnel kit (specialty) on the radiator neck.
• Pour in Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink, premixed) using a funnel until full.
• Start the engine and let it idle with the heater set to HOT.
• As it warms up, watch for bubbles in the funnel and add coolant as the level drops.
• Gently squeeze the upper radiator hose by hand a few times to help push air out.
• When the cooling fan cycles on/off and bubbles mostly stop, shut the engine off and let it cool.
• Top off the radiator, then fill the overflow reservoir to the FULL line.

Step 9: Reinstall the undertray and lower the car

• Reinstall the lower engine cover using the trim clip removal tool and 10mm socket.
• Lower the car using the floor jack, remove jack stands, then fully lower.

• With the engine running, check for leaks at the thermostat housing and hose connection using a flashlight.
• Verify the cabin heater blows hot air and the temperature gauge stays normal.
• After your first drive and full cool-down, recheck the reservoir level and top off if needed.
• Dispose of old coolant properly (most auto parts stores accept it).
