🔧 Altima - Starter Motor Replacement
This repair replaces the electric starter motor that turns the engine when you press the start button. On your Altima, the starter mounts where the engine meets the CVT transmission, and access is mainly from underneath.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching starter wiring. The starter has a direct battery-power cable.
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool fully before working underneath. Turbo and exhaust parts can stay hot.
- ⚠️ Use jack stands on solid, level ground. Never work under your Altima with only a floor jack holding it up.
- ⚠️ Keep the key fob away from the vehicle while working so the electrical system stays asleep.
- ⚠️ Support the starter with one hand when removing the last bolt. It can drop suddenly.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Starter motor - Qty: 1
- Starter mounting bolts - Qty: 2, replace if damaged or corroded
- Battery terminal anti-corrosion grease - Qty: 1 small packet
- Lower splash shield clips - Qty: As needed if broken
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Altima on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🧊 Let the engine cool for at least 30-60 minutes if it was recently driven.
- 🔋 Open the hood and locate the battery before lifting the vehicle.
- 📌 A jack stand is a fixed support that safely holds the vehicle after lifting. A floor jack is only for lifting.
- 📸 Take photos of the starter wiring before removal so reassembly is easier.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot touch the post.
- Wrap the cable end with a clean rag if needed.
- Black cable comes off first.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Altima at the front jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the approved front support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
- Use mechanic gloves and safety glasses before working underneath.
Step 3: Remove the Lower Splash Shield
- Use a trim clip removal tool to remove the plastic push clips from the lower engine splash shield.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the lower shield bolts.
- Lower the splash shield and set it aside.
- The splash shield is the plastic panel under the engine that blocks road debris.
Step 4: Locate the Starter
- Use a work light and look where the engine meets the CVT transmission housing.
- Find the small cylindrical motor with a thick battery cable attached to it.
- Take a photo of the large cable and small connector before unplugging anything.
- Photos prevent wiring mistakes.
Step 5: Remove Blocking Bracket if Equipped
- If a small bracket blocks starter access, use a 12mm socket or 14mm socket to remove the bracket bolts.
- Set the bracket and bolts aside in order.
- If no bracket blocks access, move to the next step.
Step 6: Disconnect Starter Wiring
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver gently to release the lock tab on the small starter control connector.
- Unplug the small connector by hand.
- Use a 12mm socket or 13mm socket to remove the nut on the large starter power cable.
- Move the cable away from the starter so it cannot touch metal.
- Installation torque: starter power cable nut to 10-13 Nm (89-115 in-lbs)
Step 7: Remove Starter Mounting Bolts
- Support the starter with one hand.
- Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to loosen the starter mounting bolts.
- Use a 3/8-inch drive universal joint adapter with the 14mm socket if the upper bolt angle is tight.
- Remove the lower bolt, then remove the upper bolt while holding the starter.
- Installation torque: starter mounting bolts to 44-54 Nm (32-40 ft-lbs)
Step 8: Remove the Old Starter
- Slide the starter straight out from the transmission housing.
- Lower it through the bottom of the engine bay.
- If it catches, rotate it gently by hand. Do not pry on wiring or aluminum housings.
- Do not force it.
Step 9: Compare Old and New Starters
- Place the old and new starter motor next to each other.
- Confirm the mounting holes, gear nose, and electrical terminals match.
- Do not install the new starter if the mounting shape or connector position is different.
Step 10: Install the New Starter
- Guide the new starter into position by hand.
- Start both mounting bolts by hand first. This prevents cross-threading, which means damaging the threads by starting the bolt crooked.
- Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to snug both bolts evenly.
- Use a torque wrench 10-100 Nm range with the 14mm socket to tighten the starter mounting bolts to 44-54 Nm (32-40 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Reconnect Starter Wiring
- Install the large battery cable onto the starter terminal by hand.
- Use a 12mm socket or 13mm socket with the torque wrench 10-100 Nm range to tighten the cable nut to 10-13 Nm (89-115 in-lbs).
- Push the small control connector onto the starter until it clicks.
- Check that wiring is not touching hot exhaust parts or sharp brackets.
Step 12: Reinstall Removed Bracket
- If you removed a bracket, reinstall it in the same position.
- Use a 12mm socket or 14mm socket to tighten the bracket bolts.
- If the bracket uses 12mm-head bolts, tighten to 18-25 Nm (13-18 ft-lbs).
- If the bracket uses 14mm-head bolts, tighten to 35-45 Nm (26-33 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield
- Lift the lower splash shield back into position.
- Install the plastic clips by hand.
- Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the splash shield bolts.
- Use the torque wrench 10-100 Nm range with the 10mm socket to tighten small splash shield bolts to 5-7 Nm (44-62 in-lbs).
Step 14: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift your Altima slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower the vehicle slowly to the ground.
- Remove the wheel chocks.
Step 15: Reconnect the Battery
- Apply a small amount of battery terminal anti-corrosion grease to the negative battery post.
- Place the negative cable back onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket to tighten the negative terminal clamp.
- Use the torque wrench 10-100 Nm range with the 10mm socket to tighten the battery terminal nut to 5-6 Nm (44-53 in-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Press the brake pedal and start your Altima. It should crank strongly and start normally.
- 👂 Listen for clicking, grinding, or the starter staying engaged after the engine starts. Shut the engine off if you hear that.
- 🔍 Check that no warning lights remain after the battery reconnect.
- 🪟 If the auto window feature needs reset, fully lower the window, fully raise it, then hold the switch up for 2-3 seconds.
- 🚗 Test drive briefly, park, shut off the engine, then restart it once more.
