šŸ”§ Ranger - Starter Motor Replacement

Your Ranger’s starter motor cranks the engine when you turn the key or press Start. Replacing it means safely disconnecting the battery, removing the electrical connections on the starter, unbolting it from the transmission bellhousing, then installing the new unit.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • šŸ›‘ Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the starter wiring (the main cable is always ā€œhotā€).
  • 🧊 Let the exhaust cool fully; the starter area can be close to hot components.
  • 🧰 Support the truck with jack stands on the frame; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • šŸ”Œ Don’t let your wrench bridge the starter’s main power stud to metal; it can arc hard.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Flashlight
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • Socket set: 8mm, 10mm, 13mm, 15mm
  • Wrench set: 10mm, 13mm
  • 3/8" drive extension set (3" and 6")
  • 3/8" drive swivel joint
  • Trim clip remover
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Torque wrench (10-100 Nm range)

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Starter motor - Qty: 1
  • Starter electrical terminal boot (if damaged) - Qty: 1
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
  • Replacement splash shield clips (if any break) - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and make sure you have your radio presets/phone pairing noted (battery will be disconnected).
  • Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm wrench to remove the negative terminal first, then position it so it can’t spring back.
  • Raise the front of your Ranger with a floor jack and support it with jack stands under the frame.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the lower splash shield

  • Use a trim clip remover and flat-blade screwdriver to remove the push-clips/screws holding the lower splash shield.
  • Set the shield and fasteners aside in a tray so nothing gets lost.

Step 2: Locate the starter motor

  • From underneath, use a flashlight to find the starter where it bolts to the transmission bellhousing (it’s a small motor with a thicker battery cable attached).
  • If it’s oily, wipe it clean first.

Step 3: Disconnect the starter wiring

  • Remove the small solenoid connector: press the tab and pull it off by hand (don’t yank the wires).
  • Remove the main battery cable nut using a 13mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Move the cable aside so it can’t touch the starter stud.
  • When reinstalling the main cable nut, Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
  • Apply a thin film of dielectric grease to the connector seal before reconnecting.

Step 4: Remove the starter mounting bolts

  • Support the starter with one hand.
  • Use a 15mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and a 6" extension (and swivel joint if needed) to remove the starter mounting bolts.
  • Slide the starter straight out of the bellhousing and lower it out.

Step 5: Compare the old and new starter

  • Check the new starter matches the old one: same mounting ears, same electrical stud locations, same connector style.
  • Clean the mounting surface on the bellhousing with a dry rag so the starter seats flat.

Step 6: Install the new starter

  • Position the new starter into place by hand.
  • Start the mounting bolts by hand first (this prevents cross-threading, which means damaging the threads by starting crooked).
  • Tighten the mounting bolts using a 15mm socket and torque wrench: Torque to 48 Nm (35 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect the wiring

  • Install the main battery cable onto the starter stud and tighten with a 13mm socket and torque wrench: Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect the small solenoid connector until it clicks.
  • Double-check the cable routing is not rubbing on sharp edges or touching the exhaust.

Step 8: Reinstall the splash shield and lower the truck

  • Reinstall the lower splash shield using the trim clip remover and flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Raise slightly with the floor jack, remove the jack stands, and lower the truck.

Step 9: Reconnect the battery

  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench.
  • Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).

āœ… After Repair

  • Start your Ranger and confirm it cranks strongly with no clicking or grinding.
  • With the engine running, check that no warning lights appear and there’s no burning smell near the starter area.
  • Recheck under the truck for any loose wiring near the starter after your first short drive.
