🔧 CX-9 - Starter Motor Replacement

Your CX-9’s starter motor bolts to the transmission bellhousing and spins the engine to start it. Replacement usually involves disconnecting the battery, removing a few intake/battery-area parts for access, unplugging the starter wiring, and swapping the unit.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the starter wiring (the main cable is always “hot”).
  • ⚠️ Support the CX-9 with jack stands on solid, level ground if working underneath—never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool; the turbo/nearby piping can be very hot.
  • ⚠️ Keep metal tools away from the starter’s main power terminal to prevent shorting.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Wheel chocks
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 3/8" extensions (3" and 6")
  • Universal joint adapter (swivel)
  • Torque wrench (3/8" drive)
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Fender cover
  • Shop light

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Starter motor - Qty: 1
  • Starter mounting bolts - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal protectant - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and install a fender cover to protect paint.
  • If you’ll work from underneath, chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks, then lift with a floor jack and support with jack stands.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp and remove it from the battery post.
  • Wrap the cable so it can’t spring back.

Step 2: Remove the engine cover and intake ducting (for access)

  • Lift off the engine cover by hand (it’s press-fit on rubber grommets).
  • Use a flathead screwdriver to loosen any hose clamps on the intake duct you need to move for working room.
  • Use pliers to release any spring clamps on small vacuum/vent hoses, then carefully slide hoses off.

Step 3: Create working room near the starter area

  • Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to remove any brackets/covers that block access to the starter on the transmission side of the engine bay.
  • Use a shop light to locate the starter: it’s a small motor with a solenoid and a thick battery cable attached.

Step 4: Raise the CX-9 (if needed for access)

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the correct front jacking point, then support with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Use wheel chocks to keep the vehicle from rolling.

Step 5: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out plastic push-clips.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove any splash shield bolts, then lower the panel.

Step 6: Disconnect the starter electrical connections

  • On the starter solenoid, unplug the small control connector by releasing its lock tab (use a flathead screwdriver gently if needed).
  • Remove the rubber boot from the main power terminal.
  • Use a 12mm socket to remove the nut for the main battery cable, then set the cable aside so it can’t touch metal.
  • Apply a thin wipe of dielectric grease to the connector seal during reassembly.

Step 7: Remove the starter mounting bolts

  • Use a 14mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 3/8" extensions (3" and 6") to remove the starter mounting bolts (typically 2 bolts into the bellhousing).
  • If clearance is tight, use a universal joint adapter (swivel) with the 14mm socket.
  • Support the starter with one hand as the last bolt comes out.

Step 8: Remove the starter

  • Work the starter out of the bellhousing area and down/out (or up/out) depending on your access path.
  • Rotate it slowly to clear hoses and wiring.

Step 9: Install the new starter

  • Position the new starter into place and start both mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to snug the bolts evenly.
  • Use a torque wrench (3/8" drive) to tighten the starter mounting bolts: Torque to 44 Nm (32 ft-lbs).
  • A torque wrench is a tool that clicks when a bolt reaches the correct tightness.

Step 10: Reconnect the starter wiring

  • Install the main battery cable onto the starter terminal.
  • Use a 12mm socket to tighten the terminal nut: Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
  • Reinstall the rubber boot over the terminal.
  • Plug in the small solenoid connector until it clicks.

Step 11: Reinstall covers/ducting and the splash shield

  • Reinstall any brackets/covers removed using a 10mm socket and 12mm socket.
  • Reinstall intake ducting and tighten clamps using a flathead screwdriver.
  • Reinstall the lower splash shield using a 10mm socket and trim clip removal tool.

Step 12: Reconnect the battery

  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten with a 10mm socket.
  • Apply battery terminal protectant if available.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm it cranks strongly and starts normally.
  • Listen for abnormal grinding or a “whirring” after start—if you hear it, shut off and recheck starter seating/bolts.
  • Check that no wires are touching hot or moving parts.
  • If the battery was disconnected, re-check clock/radio settings.
