🔧 Malibu - Starter Motor Replacement
The starter motor cranks your A4—sorry, your Malibu—so the engine can start. On your Malibu, the starter sits at the transmission/bellhousing area and is easiest to access from underneath after removing the lower splash shield.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Disconnect the battery before touching the starter wiring (the large cable is always “hot” and can short to ground).
- ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands on solid ground; never rely on a floor jack alone.
- ⚠️ Let the engine/exhaust cool first; the starter area can be close to hot parts.
- ⚠️ If your Malibu has Auto Stop/Start, don’t reconnect the battery until everything is reassembled.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
- Open the hood and make sure you have your radio/security codes if applicable.
- Disconnect the battery negative cable using a 10mm socket (battery “negative” is the cable with the “-” mark).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery cable clamp and remove it from the battery.
- Position the cable so it can’t spring back and touch the battery post.
- When reinstalling later: Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).
- Battery disconnected = no accidental sparks.
Step 2: Raise and support the front of the car
- Use a floor jack to lift the front of your Malibu at the approved front lift point.
- Set the vehicle down onto jack stands placed at solid support points.
- Give the vehicle a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable before going underneath.
Step 3: Remove the lower splash shield
- Use an 8mm socket and 10mm socket to remove the shield screws (your Malibu may use both).
- Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out any plastic push-clips.
- Lower the splash shield and set it aside.
Step 4: Locate the starter and label the wires
- Find the starter where the engine meets the transmission (bellhousing area).
- The starter has:
- A large battery cable (thick wire) on the main stud.
- A smaller control wire on a plug or small stud.
- Use your work light and take a photo with your phone for reference.
Step 5: Disconnect the starter wiring
- If there is a protective boot on the main cable, pull it back by hand or use a flat-blade screwdriver gently.
- Remove the main battery cable nut using a 13mm socket.
- Disconnect the small control connector by pressing the tab and pulling it off by hand.
- When reinstalling later: Torque the main terminal nut to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Don’t twist the stud—hold the cable steady.
Step 6: Remove the starter mounting bolts
- Support the starter with one hand.
- Use a 15mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet, plus a 6" extension and universal joint adapter as needed, to remove the starter mounting bolts.
- Once the bolts are out, lower the starter down and out.
- When installing later: Torque starter mounting bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Transfer any heat shield or bracket (if equipped)
- Some starters use a small heat shield or support bracket.
- Use a 10mm socket to move the shield/bracket from the old starter to the new one (if present).
- When reinstalling: Torque small shield/bracket bolts to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Match orientation exactly like your photo.
Step 8: Install the new starter
- Position the new starter into place by hand.
- Start the mounting bolts by hand first (prevents cross-threading).
- Tighten the bolts using a 15mm socket and then finish with a 3/8" torque wrench: Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reconnect the wiring
- Install the main battery cable onto the starter stud and thread the nut on by hand.
- Tighten using a 13mm socket: Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Reconnect the small control connector until it clicks into place.
- Re-seat the protective boot over the main terminal.
Step 10: Reinstall the splash shield and lower the car
- Reinstall the splash shield using the 8mm socket, 10mm socket, and trim clip removal tool (to reinstall any clips).
- Raise the vehicle slightly with the floor jack, remove the jack stands, then lower it to the ground.
Step 11: Reconnect the battery and test
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket: Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).
- Start the engine and listen for a strong, normal crank.
- If you hear clicking or slow cranking, recheck the main cable connection and the battery condition.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Malibu 3–5 times to confirm consistent cranking.
- Check underneath for any loose wiring near the starter.
- If a warning light appears after battery disconnect, drive a short loop and recheck; some modules relearn after a few key cycles.
