🔧 Starter Motor - Replacement

The starter motor on your Equinox is mounted low on the engine/transmission side, so this job is usually done from underneath. You’ll disconnect the battery first, remove the electrical connections, then unbolt and swap the starter.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the starter. The starter has constant battery power.
  • Use jack stands under the vehicle. Never rely on the jack alone.
  • Keep hands clear of the engine bay and underbody until the battery is disconnected.
  • The exhaust and nearby parts may be hot. Let the vehicle cool fully.
  • If equipped with start/stop or battery monitoring, expect battery-related faults after reconnecting; these usually clear after a normal start cycle.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm wrench
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Torque wrench
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Starter motor - Qty: 1
  • Starter mounting bolts - Qty: 2
  • Battery terminal clamp nut - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and keep the key fob away from the vehicle.
  • Lift the front of the vehicle and support it securely with jack stands.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm wrench and isolate it so it cannot touch the terminal.
  • Tip: Take a photo of the wiring before removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to remove the negative battery cable from the battery.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the terminal.

Step 2: Raise and secure the vehicle

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to raise the front of the vehicle.
  • Set the vehicle on jack stands and chock the rear wheels.
  • Make sure the vehicle is stable before going underneath.

Step 3: Locate the starter motor

  • From underneath, find the starter mounted at the engine/transmission bellhousing area.
  • Identify the battery cable and control wire attached to the starter.

Step 4: Remove the starter wiring

  • Use a 13mm socket to remove the battery cable nut from the starter main terminal.
  • Remove the smaller control wire fastener with the appropriate 13mm socket or terminal tool if equipped.
  • Set the wires aside carefully so they do not hang by the connectors.

Step 5: Remove the starter mounting bolts

  • Use a 15mm socket, ratchet, and short extension to remove the starter mounting bolts.
  • Support the starter with one hand as you remove the last bolt.
  • Lower the starter out through the opening.

Step 6: Install the new starter

  • Position the new starter in place by hand.
  • Install the mounting bolts finger-tight first.
  • Use a 15mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the starter bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect the starter wiring

  • Reattach the battery cable and control wire to the starter.
  • Use a 13mm socket to tighten the fasteners snugly.
  • Tighten the main terminal nut to 13 Nm (115 in-lbs).

Step 8: Reassemble and lower the vehicle

  • Inspect the area to make sure no tools are left behind.
  • Lower the vehicle carefully off the jack stands.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with the 10mm wrench and tighten it snugly.

Step 9: Test the repair

  • Start the engine and listen for smooth cranking.
  • Check for warning lights and make sure the starter wiring stays secure.
  • If the engine does not crank, recheck battery connections and starter wiring.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine 2-3 times to confirm normal operation.
  • Check underneath for any loose fasteners or contact with nearby parts.
  • If you hear a grinding noise, stop and recheck starter alignment right away.
  • If the battery was weak before the repair, have it tested after the job.
