🔧 Envision - Starter Motor Replacement

The starter motor is the electric motor that cranks your engine when you turn the key/push the button. Replacing it on your Envision is mostly an access job: safely lifting the SUV, removing the lower splash shield, disconnecting the wiring, and swapping the starter.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

Assumption: stock 2.0L turbo with starter accessed from below.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the battery before touching starter wiring (the main cable is always “hot”).
  • ⚠️ Support the SUV with jack stands on the proper lift points; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine/exhaust cool first; the turbo/exhaust area can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Keep tools away from the positive cable and metal ground at the same time to prevent sparks/shorts.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Wheel chocks
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Metric socket set (8mm-18mm)
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench
  • Socket extension set (3", 6", 12")
  • Universal joint socket adapter
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Work light
  • Battery terminal wrench (10mm)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Starter motor assembly - Qty: 1
  • Starter electrical terminal nut kit - Qty: 1
  • Replacement underbody splash shield fasteners/clips (assorted) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, turn ignition OFF, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
  • Open the hood and plan to disconnect the battery. (The battery is in the engine bay.)
  • Gather a work light and lay out bolts/fasteners in order as you remove them.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm battery terminal wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal (the “-” cable).
  • Lift the negative cable off and tuck it aside so it cannot spring back onto the battery post.
  • This prevents accidental short circuits.

Step 2: Raise and support the SUV

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of your Envision.
  • Set it down securely on jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) at the proper front lift/support points.
  • Give the vehicle a gentle shake to confirm it is stable before going underneath.

Step 3: Remove the lower splash shield (undertray)

  • Use a trim clip removal tool and flat-blade screwdriver to remove plastic push-clips.
  • Use the appropriate metric socket (commonly 10mm) and a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove any bolts.
  • Lower the shield and set it aside.

Step 4: Locate the starter and clear access

  • Use a work light to find the starter where the engine meets the transmission (bellhousing area).
  • If a small brace, heat shield, or wiring retainer blocks access, remove it using the appropriate metric socket and ratchet.
  • Take a photo before moving wiring.

Step 5: Disconnect the starter electrical connectors

  • Remove the small solenoid connector by releasing its lock tab using pliers or a flat-blade screwdriver, then pull it straight off.
  • Remove the rubber boot covering the main battery cable terminal.
  • Use a 13mm socket (common size) with a ratchet to remove the nut holding the main battery cable to the starter.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot contact the starter terminal.

Step 6: Remove the starter mounting bolts

  • Support the starter with one hand while loosening bolts.
  • Use a 15mm socket, ratchet, and socket extension set (3", 6", 12") as needed to remove the starter mounting bolts.
  • If your angle is tight, use a universal joint socket adapter to reach the bolts.
  • Remove the starter from the bellhousing and maneuver it out carefully.

Step 7: Install the new starter

  • Compare the old and new starter (mounting ears and electrical terminals should match).
  • Position the new starter into place by hand.
  • Start the mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten the mounting bolts using a ratchet, then final-tighten with a torque wrench to Torque to OEM specification.

Step 8: Reconnect starter wiring

  • Install the main battery cable onto the starter terminal.
  • Install the terminal nut and tighten using a 13mm socket and torque wrench to Torque to OEM specification.
  • Reinstall the rubber boot over the terminal.
  • Plug the solenoid connector back in until it clicks.

Step 9: Reinstall the splash shield and lower the vehicle

  • Reinstall the undertray using the trim clip removal tool (for clips) and the appropriate metric socket (for bolts).
  • Raise slightly with the floor jack, remove the jack stands, and lower the SUV to the ground.

Step 10: Reconnect the battery and test

  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal using the 10mm battery terminal wrench.
  • Start the engine and listen: cranking should be strong and consistent (no clicking/grinding).
  • With the engine running, check underneath for any loose wiring near moving parts.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify the engine starts multiple times (at least 3 start cycles).
  • If you had any warning lights before, they may clear after a few drive cycles; if not, a scan may be needed.
  • Re-check the undertray fasteners after a short test drive for rattles.
