🔧 Starter Motor - Replacement

The starter on your Ram is mounted low at the transmission bellhousing, so access is tight but straightforward. You’ll remove the battery power first, then unbolt the starter, swap it out, and reinstall everything with the correct torque.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable first. The starter has direct battery power.
  • Keep hands clear of the engine fan and exhaust. Some parts may be hot.
  • Support the vehicle securely if you need more access underneath. Use jack stands, not just a jack.
  • Do not let the battery cable or starter power cable touch metal after removal.
  • If the truck has an aftermarket remote start or alarm, make sure it is disabled before testing.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm wrench
  • 13mm socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 3/8-inch extension set
  • Universal joint socket adapter
  • Torque wrench
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated for vehicle weight)
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Starter motor - Qty: 1
  • Starter mounting bolts - Qty: 2
  • Battery terminal cleaner - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Shift to Park and turn the ignition off.
  • Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
  • Wait at least 2 minutes after disconnecting battery power before working near starter wiring.
  • If the truck is raised for access, support it with jack stands before going underneath.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect battery power

  • Use a 10mm wrench to remove the negative battery cable from the battery.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the terminal.

Step 2: Raise the front of the truck if needed

  • If access is tight, lift the front with a floor jack and support it on jack stands.
  • Make sure the truck is stable before you go underneath.

Step 3: Locate the starter

  • The starter is mounted low on the engine at the transmission bellhousing.
  • Trace the large battery cable to find the starter if needed.

Step 4: Remove the starter wiring

  • Use a 13mm socket to remove the nut on the main battery cable at the starter.
  • Remove the smaller signal wire connector if equipped, using a flat-blade screwdriver if the retainer needs to be released.
  • Keep the cables organized so they go back on the same terminals.

Step 5: Unbolt the starter

  • Use a 13mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and extension to remove the starter mounting bolts.
  • Support the starter with one hand as you remove the last bolt.
  • Torque on installation: 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs)

Step 6: Remove the starter

  • Lower the starter out of the bellhousing area carefully.
  • Watch for tight clearance around hoses, wiring, and the frame.

Step 7: Install the new starter

  • Position the new starter in place by hand first.
  • Start both mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 13mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the bolts to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect the wiring

  • Reconnect the small signal wire first, if equipped.
  • Install the main battery cable with a 13mm socket and tighten the nut snugly.
  • Make sure both connections are clean and tight.

Step 9: Restore battery power

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
  • Tighten it securely.

Step 10: Test the repair

  • Turn the key to start the engine and listen for normal starter engagement.
  • Check that the engine cranks smoothly and starts without a click or grinding noise.
  • Inspect the starter area for loose wiring after the engine is running.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the truck 2-3 times to confirm reliable cranking.
  • Check battery terminals for corrosion or looseness.
  • If the starter still clicks or cranks slowly, test the battery and charging system.
