🔧 GLA - Starter Motor Replacement

The starter motor cranks your engine when you turn the key/push Start. On your GLA, the starter is mounted at the transmission bellhousing area, so most of the work is gaining safe access, disconnecting the battery, and swapping the unit without damaging wiring.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

Assumption: Stock intake/undertray; starter accessible from underneath.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the battery before touching starter wiring (prevents shorts and airbag/SRS faults).
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle on jack stands; never work under a car supported only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine/exhaust cool; the starter sits near hot components.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull on wiring; release connectors fully to avoid broken terminals.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • E10 external Torx socket
  • E12 external Torx socket

  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 3/8" torque wrench (10-100 Nm range)
  • 6" extension
  • 12" extension
  • Universal joint adapter
  • Trim clip remover
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Work light

  • Starter electrical terminal nut - Qty: 1
  • Underbody shield fastener clips - Qty: 2-6
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and keep the key/fob at least 15 feet away from the vehicle.
  • Plan to disconnect the battery negative cable first; this prevents accidental short circuits.
  • Have your radio presets handy if you care about them; some settings may reset.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Open the hood and locate the battery (or front jump/charge point depending on equipment).
  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen and remove the negative battery terminal (black “-”).
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the terminal.

Step 2: Raise and support the vehicle

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of the vehicle at the approved front jacking point.
  • Set the car down onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) and give the vehicle a firm shake test.

Step 3: Remove the lower engine undertray

  • Use a trim clip remover and flathead screwdriver to remove plastic clips (a trim clip remover is a fork-shaped tool that pops clips out without breaking them).
  • Use an E10 external Torx socket with a 3/8" ratchet and extension to remove the undertray fasteners.
  • Set the undertray and hardware aside in a small pile so nothing gets lost.

Step 4: Locate the starter and label the wiring

  • Use a work light to find the starter at the transmission bellhousing area.
  • Identify the two connections:
  • The thick battery cable on the large stud (B+).
  • The smaller control wire connector (signal wire).
  • Take a quick photo before unplugging.

Step 5: Disconnect the starter electrical connections

  • Remove the starter terminal protective cap (if equipped) using a flathead screwdriver.
  • Use a 13mm socket to remove the nut holding the thick power cable to the starter stud.
  • Carefully lift the cable off and move it aside so it can’t touch metal.
  • Unplug the small control connector by depressing the lock tab and pulling straight off.
  • Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the small connector seal for reassembly.

Step 6: Remove the starter mounting bolts

  • Support the starter body with one hand.
  • Use an E12 external Torx socket with a 3/8" ratchet, 12" extension, and universal joint adapter to remove the starter mounting bolts.
  • Pull the starter straight back from the bellhousing, then lower it out carefully.

Step 7: Install the new starter

  • Compare the old and new starter: same nose length, mounting ears, and electrical studs.
  • Position the new starter into place and hand-start the mounting bolts to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten the mounting bolts evenly using an E12 external Torx socket.
  • Torque to 55 Nm (41 ft-lbs)

Step 8: Reconnect the starter wiring

  • Reconnect the small control connector until it clicks.
  • Install the thick power cable onto the large stud.
  • Install a new terminal nut (recommended) and tighten using a 13mm socket.
  • Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs)
  • Reinstall the protective cap over the power stud.

Step 9: Reinstall the undertray

  • Lift the undertray into place and start all fasteners by hand.
  • Tighten using an E10 external Torx socket with a 3/8" ratchet.
  • Reinstall clips with a trim clip remover as needed.

Step 10: Lower the vehicle and reconnect the battery

  • Use the floor jack to lift slightly, remove the jack stands, then lower the vehicle.
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 6 Nm (4 ft-lbs)

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the ignition on (do not start) and confirm there are no warning messages.
  • Start the engine and listen: the starter should crank smoothly with no grinding.
  • With the engine running, check under the car for any dangling wiring or undertray gaps.
  • If you get a battery/voltage warning, drive a short loop and recheck; if it persists, a scan may be needed.
