šŸ”§ CX-5 - Starter Motor Replacement

The starter motor cranks your engine when you turn the key/push the start button. On your CX-5, it’s bolted to the transmission bellhousing and is usually accessed best from underneath after removing the lower splash shield.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Disconnect the battery negative terminal first to prevent electrical shorts.
  • āš ļø Support the CX-5 on jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • āš ļø Let the engine cool; the exhaust and engine parts can be very hot.
  • āš ļø Keep the key fob away from the vehicle so it can’t accidentally power on.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Metric socket set (8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 14mm)
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-100 Nm range)
  • 6" socket extension (3/8" drive)
  • 12" socket extension (3/8" drive)
  • Universal swivel joint (3/8" drive)
  • Trim clip remover
  • Flat screwdriver
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Starter motor - Qty: 1
  • Starter electrical terminal nut (if damaged/corroded) - Qty: 1
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and make sure the vehicle is fully OFF.
  • Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative (–) terminal first, then position the cable so it cannot spring back.
  • A ā€œuniversal swivel jointā€ helps reach angled bolts.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and support the CX-5

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of your CX-5 at the correct front jacking point.
  • Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the proper support points and lower the vehicle onto them.
  • Give the vehicle a gentle shake to confirm it is stable.

Step 2: Remove the lower engine splash shield (undercover)

  • Use a trim clip remover and flat screwdriver to remove the plastic clips.
  • Use an 8mm socket (or 10mm socket if equipped) with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the small bolts.
  • Set the shield and fasteners aside in a small pile so nothing gets lost.

Step 3: Locate the starter and unplug the control connector

  • Use a flashlight to find the starter on the transmission bellhousing area (where the engine and transmission meet).
  • Unplug the small starter control connector by releasing the lock tab by hand (use a flat screwdriver gently if needed).

Step 4: Remove the main starter power cable

  • Pull back the rubber boot on the starter’s large power terminal.
  • Use a 12mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the terminal nut.
  • Lift the cable off the stud and tuck it aside so it cannot touch metal.
  • When reinstalling: Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).

Step 5: Remove the starter mounting bolts

  • Support the starter with one hand while loosening bolts with the other.
  • Use a 14mm socket with a 6" socket extension (3/8" drive) and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the starter mounting bolts.
  • If access is tight, use a universal swivel joint (3/8" drive) and a 12" socket extension (3/8" drive).
  • Remove the starter from the vehicle.

Step 6: Compare parts and install the new starter

  • Compare the old and new starter: mounting ears, electrical stud position, and connector style should match.
  • Position the new starter in place by hand.
  • Start the mounting bolts by hand first (prevents cross-threading).
  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-100 Nm range) to tighten the mounting bolts: Torque to 44 Nm (32 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect the wiring

  • Install the main power cable onto the starter stud, then install the nut using a 12mm socket.
  • Use a 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-100 Nm range): Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
  • Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease inside the rubber boot, then slide the boot back into place.
  • Plug in the small control connector until it clicks.

Step 8: Reinstall the lower splash shield

  • Position the shield and install the bolts by hand first.
  • Use an 8mm socket (or 10mm socket if equipped) with a 3/8" drive ratchet to snug the bolts.
  • Reinstall the plastic clips using the trim clip remover as needed.

Step 9: Reconnect the battery and lower the CX-5

  • Raise the vehicle slightly with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum), remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum), then lower it to the ground.
  • Reconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket: Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

āœ… After Repair

  • Start your CX-5 and confirm it cranks strongly and starts normally.
  • Listen for abnormal grinding or ā€œstarter staying engagedā€ noises; shut it off immediately if heard.
  • Check that no warning lights appear after a short test drive.
  • Recheck the starter power cable nut after a day or two if you notice intermittent no-crank.
