How to Replace the Starter Motor on a 2014-2024 INFINITI QX80 5.6L V8 (Engine: V8 5.6L)
Step-by-step DIY instructions with tools/parts list, safety tips, and OEM torque spec references for 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2024
🔧 QX80 - Starter Motor Replacement
The starter motor spins the engine so it can start. On your QX80, the starter is mounted low near the transmission bellhousing, so the job is mostly done from underneath with the truck safely lifted.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
Assumption: Stock 5.6L layout with starter access from underneath.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Disconnect the battery negative cable first to prevent shorts and burns.
- ⚠️ Support the QX80 on jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
- ⚠️ Let the exhaust cool fully before working near it.
- ⚠️ Keep tools away from the positive starter terminal; it is always “hot” if the battery is connected.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
- Open the hood and disconnect the battery using a 10mm battery terminal wrench; remove the negative cable and keep it from springing back.
- Raise the front and support the frame with jack stands.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)
- Use a trim clip removal tool and flathead screwdriver to remove clips/screws.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove any shield bolts.
- Set the shield and hardware aside in a small tray.
Step 2: Locate the starter and identify the wiring
- Use a work light and look at the passenger side of the bellhousing area.
- You’ll see a large battery cable on a stud (with a nut) and a smaller signal wire connector.
- Take a photo before disconnecting anything.
Step 3: Disconnect the starter electrical connections
- Remove the protective rubber boot from the large starter terminal by hand.
- Use a 13mm socket to remove the nut holding the main battery cable to the starter stud.
- Pull the cable off and move it aside so it cannot touch metal.
- Disconnect the small signal connector by hand; if it’s tight, use needle-nose pliers gently.
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease (a non-conductive moisture barrier) to the small connector seal area only.
Step 4: Remove the starter mounting bolts
- Support the starter body with one hand.
- Use a 14mm socket, 12" extension, and universal joint adapter to remove the starter mounting bolts.
- A universal joint helps reach angled bolts.
- Remove the starter from the vehicle.
Step 5: Compare the old and new starter
- Check that the new starter matches the old one: mounting ears, electrical stud location, and small connector style.
- If the new starter does not match, do not install it.
Step 6: Install the new starter
- Position the starter into place by hand.
- Start the mounting bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use a 14mm socket, extension, and ratchet to snug the bolts evenly.
- Finish tightening with a 3/8" drive torque wrench: Torque to OEM specification.
Step 7: Reconnect the starter wiring
- Install the small signal connector until it clicks in place by hand.
- Install the main battery cable on the stud and thread the nut by hand.
- Use a 13mm socket to tighten the nut: Torque to OEM specification.
- Reinstall the rubber boot over the terminal.
Step 8: Clean and secure any grounds (quick reliability step)
- Use a wire brush to clean any nearby ground contact surfaces you touched during the job.
- Make sure wiring is routed away from sharp edges and hot exhaust parts.
Step 9: Reinstall the lower splash shield
- Reinstall the shield using the 10mm socket and the trim clip removal tool.
- Confirm no tools are left on the frame or crossmember.
Step 10: Reconnect the battery and lower the vehicle
- Lower the QX80 off the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using the 10mm battery terminal wrench.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and listen: you should hear a strong, smooth crank with no grinding.
- Check for any warning lights and confirm all accessories work normally.
- With the engine running, recheck under the vehicle for any loose shields or dangling wiring.
- If you hear a metallic scrape/grind, shut it off and recheck starter seating and bolt tightness.
