📋 Before You Begin
- Park your CX-5 on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and keep the key fob at least 10 feet away.
- If you’ll jack it up, place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Know your tools: a torque wrench tightens bolts to an exact tightness setting so you don’t strip or crack parts.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative (–) battery terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative cable off and tuck it aside so it can’t spring back.
- Negative off first, on last.
Step 2: Remove the air intake duct (for access)
- Use an 8mm socket or flat trim clip tool (depending on clamp style) to loosen the intake duct clamps.
- Unclip any attached hose(s) carefully by hand, then lift the duct out.
- Set hardware aside in a small container.
Step 3: Raise the front (recommended for easier access)
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Use a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift the front jacking point.
- Set the vehicle down onto jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).
Step 4: Remove the front under cover (splash shield), if equipped
- Use a flat trim clip tool to pop out plastic clips.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove any bolts holding the cover.
- Lower the cover and slide it out.
Step 5: Locate the starter on the transmission bellhousing
- Use a flashlight to find the starter where the engine meets the transmission (it has a large power cable and a smaller control wire).
- If access is tight, use a 3/8" extension set and universal joint adapter (3/8") to line up on the bolts.
Step 6: Disconnect the starter wiring
- Remove the starter terminal protective cap by hand.
- Use a 12mm deep socket to remove the nut on the large battery cable (B+ terminal), then move the cable aside.
- Disconnect the small starter solenoid connector by pressing the tab and pulling it straight off.
- When reinstalling the B+ nut, Torque to 9–12 Nm (80–105 in-lbs).
Step 7: Remove the starter mounting bolts
- Use a 14mm socket, ratchet (1/2"), and a 6"–12" extension to remove the starter mounting bolts.
- Support the starter with one hand as the last bolt comes out (it’s heavier than it looks).
- Pull the starter straight out of the bellhousing.
Step 8: Install the new starter
- Compare the new starter to the old one (same mounting ears, same electrical studs).
- Slide the starter into place and hand-thread the mounting bolts to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 14mm socket and torque wrench (10–100 Nm range) to tighten the mounting bolts: Torque to 40–50 Nm (30–37 ft-lbs).
- Start bolts by hand every time.
Step 9: Reconnect wiring and reassemble
- Reconnect the small solenoid connector by pushing until it clicks.
- Install the large battery cable and nut using a 12mm deep socket: Torque to 9–12 Nm (80–105 in-lbs).
- Reinstall the terminal cap.
- Reinstall the under cover using a 10mm socket and flat trim clip tool.
- Reinstall the intake duct using an 8mm socket and tighten clamps snugly.
Step 10: Reconnect battery and test
- Reinstall the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench.
- Use a torque wrench (10–100 Nm range): Torque to 5–7 Nm (44–62 in-lbs).
- Start the engine and confirm it cranks strongly with no clicking.

- ✅ Verify there are no warning lights and the engine starts consistently.
- ✅ Recheck that the large starter cable nut is tight and the cap is installed.
- ✅ If you removed the under cover, confirm all clips/bolts are installed and nothing is hanging down.
- ✅ If the battery was disconnected, reset the clock and radio presets if needed.
