🔧 Starter Motor - Replacement

The starter on your Rogue is mounted low on the engine/transaxle area, so the job usually starts with removing the battery and intake parts to open up access. Once the wiring and mounting bolts are out, the starter lifts out and the new one goes back in the same way.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the starter. The starter cable is always hot when the battery is connected.
  • The starter motor can be hot after driving. Let the engine cool down first.
  • Use jack stands if you raise the vehicle. Never rely on a jack alone.
  • Keep tools away from the battery positive terminal and starter cable.
  • If your Rogue has an engine cover or air intake duct in the way, remove those parts carefully so they can be reused.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive extension
  • Torque wrench
  • Flat-blade trim tool
  • Battery terminal wrench
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Jack stands
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the shift lever to Park.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key or keep the key fob away from the vehicle.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal before starting.
  • Take a photo of each cable before removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery cable.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the battery post.
  • Torque to factory specification when reinstalling the battery terminal clamp.

Step 2: Remove intake parts for access

  • Use a flat-blade trim tool to release any clips on the air duct or air box cover.
  • Remove the intake duct and any air box pieces blocking access to the starter.
  • Label each clip and hose as you go.

Step 3: Raise the front of the vehicle if needed

  • If the starter is easier to reach from below, raise the front with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Support the vehicle with jack stands before working underneath.

Step 4: Disconnect the starter wiring

  • Locate the starter on the engine/transaxle area.
  • Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket to remove the starter cable nut and the smaller control wire fastener, depending on the terminal style.
  • Move the wires aside so they do not touch metal.
  • Torque to factory specification on reinstall for the cable nuts.

Step 5: Remove the starter mounting bolts

  • Use a 14mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive extension to remove the starter mounting bolts.
  • Support the starter with one hand while removing the last bolt.
  • Lower the starter out carefully through the opening.

Step 6: Install the new starter

  • Position the new starter in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Start the mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 14mm socket to tighten the bolts.
  • Torque to factory specification for the starter mounting bolts.

Step 7: Reconnect the starter wiring

  • Reconnect the starter cables exactly as they were removed.
  • Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket to tighten the cable nuts.
  • Torque to factory specification for the terminal nuts.
  • Apply a light coat of battery terminal protectant spray if the terminals are exposed.

Step 8: Reinstall intake parts and battery

  • Reinstall the air duct and air box pieces using the flat-blade trim tool where needed.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to factory specification on the battery clamp.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for fast, clean cranking.
  • Check that the starter does not stay engaged after the engine starts.
  • Verify there are no loose wires or missing clips near the battery and intake.
  • If the engine does not crank, recheck the battery connection and starter cable routing.
