🔧 Cherokee - Starter Motor Replacement

The starter motor spins the engine to start it. On your Cherokee, the starter is bolted to the transmission bellhousing and is usually accessed from underneath the vehicle.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours

Assumption: 2.4L factory starter, access from below with lower splash shield installed.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable first to prevent a short.
  • ⚠️ Support the Cherokee on jack stands; never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Let the exhaust cool before working near it.
  • ⚠️ Keep the key fob away from the vehicle while working.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Wheel chocks
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)

  • 3/8" drive extension set
  • Universal joint adapter
  • Torque wrench (10-100 ft-lbs range)
  • Trim clip remover
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Small wire brush
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Starter motor - Qty: 1
  • Starter electrical terminal nut - Qty: 1
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
  • Open the hood and locate the battery; you will disconnect it before touching the starter wiring.
  • If your Cherokee has a lower engine splash shield, plan to remove it for access.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable off and tuck it aside so it cannot spring back to the post.
  • Tip: Negative off first, on last.

Step 2: Raise and support the Cherokee

  • Lift the front using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Set it down securely on jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Give the vehicle a gentle push to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)

  • Use a trim clip remover and flathead screwdriver to pop out push-clips.
  • Use an 8mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove any small bolts/screws.
  • Set the shield and fasteners aside in a small pile so nothing gets lost.

Step 4: Locate the starter

  • Use a flashlight to find the starter where the engine meets the transmission (bellhousing area).
  • You’ll see a small cylinder-shaped motor with a larger battery cable attached to it.

Step 5: Disconnect the starter wiring

  • Remove the protective rubber boot from the large starter power terminal by hand.
  • Use a 13mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the nut on the large battery cable terminal.
  • Pull the cable off and move it aside so it cannot touch metal.
  • Disconnect the small control connector (signal wire) by pressing the tab; use needle-nose pliers gently if needed.
  • Tip: Don’t pull wires—pull connectors.

Step 6: Remove the starter mounting bolts

  • Support the starter with one hand.
  • Use a 15mm socket, 3/8" drive ratchet, and a 3/8" drive extension set to remove the starter mounting bolts.
  • If access is tight, use a universal joint adapter (it helps the socket bend to reach angled bolts).
  • Lower the starter out carefully once the bolts are out.

Step 7: Prep the connections

  • Use a small wire brush to clean the large cable ring terminal and the starter’s mating electrical surface if dirty.
  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the connector seals (not on the metal contact faces).
  • Tip: Clean metal helps prevent future no-starts.

Step 8: Install the new starter

  • Position the starter into place by hand.
  • Start the mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten the bolts using a 15mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet, then finish with a torque wrench.
  • Torque to 61 Nm (45 ft-lbs) for starter mounting bolts.

Step 9: Reconnect the starter wiring

  • Reconnect the small control connector until it clicks.
  • Install the large battery cable onto the starter terminal and install a new nut if supplied.
  • Tighten using a 13mm socket and torque wrench.
  • Torque to 13 Nm (115 in-lbs) for the large terminal nut.
  • Reinstall the rubber protective boot over the terminal.

Step 10: Reinstall the splash shield and lower the vehicle

  • Reinstall the splash shield using the 8mm socket and the push-clips with the trim clip remover.
  • Raise slightly with the floor jack, remove jack stands, and lower the Cherokee.

Step 11: Reconnect the battery

  • Reinstall the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Make sure the terminal is snug and does not rotate by hand.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm it cranks strongly without clicking.
  • Turn the engine off and re-check underneath for any loose wiring near the starter.
  • If you had any warning lights from battery disconnect, drive a short loop; many will clear after a few key cycles.
