🔧 Starter Motor - Replacement
The starter motor is mounted low on the engine and must be removed from underneath the truck. On your Sierra, the job is straightforward but tight, so safe lifting and battery disconnect are important before you start.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the starter wiring. The starter cable is always hot.
- Lift the truck securely and support it with jack stands. Never work under a truck held up only by a jack.
- The starter sits near hot exhaust and the transfer case area. Let the engine cool fully before starting.
- If equipped with a 4WD transfer case skid plate, remove it carefully before accessing the starter.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- Move the shift lever to Park and turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable first using a 10mm wrench.
- If your truck has an aftermarket remote start or battery accessory, disable it before service.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and secure the truck
- Use a floor jack to lift the front of the truck at the proper lift point.
- Place jack stands under the frame and lower the truck onto them.
- Make sure the truck is stable before going underneath.
Step 2: Disconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm wrench to remove the negative battery cable from the battery.
- Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the post.
Step 3: Remove access shields if equipped
- If equipped, use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket to remove the lower shield or skid plate.
- Use a trim clip removal tool for any plastic push clips.
- Keep the fasteners grouped by location.
Step 4: Disconnect the starter wiring
- Locate the starter on the lower engine block near the transmission bellhousing.
- Use a 13mm socket to remove the main battery cable nut from the starter terminal.
- Remove the smaller control wire connector by releasing the lock tab with a flat blade screwdriver if needed.
- Move both wires out of the way so they cannot get pinched.
Step 5: Remove the starter motor
- Use a 15mm socket, extension, and swivel adapter to remove the two starter mounting bolts.
- Support the starter with one hand while removing the last bolt.
- Lower the starter out carefully from underneath the truck.
Step 6: Install the new starter
- Compare the new starter to the old one before installing.
- Lift the new starter into position and start both mounting bolts by hand.
- Use a 15mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the starter bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
- Hand-start bolts to avoid cross-threading.
Step 7: Reconnect the starter wiring
- Reconnect the main battery cable and tighten the nut with a 13mm socket.
- Reconnect the smaller control wire connector until it clicks into place.
- If equipped, apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal.
- Make sure the wiring is routed away from the exhaust and moving parts.
Step 8: Reinstall shields and lower the truck
- Reinstall any skid plate or splash shield using the correct 13mm socket or 15mm socket.
- Raise the truck slightly with the floor jack, remove the jack stands, and lower it to the ground.
Step 9: Reconnect the battery and test
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
- Start the engine and listen for smooth cranking.
- Check for loose wiring, warning lights, or unusual noises.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine 3-4 times to confirm reliable cranking.
- Check under the truck for any loose fasteners or hanging wires.
- If the engine cranks but does not start, recheck the battery cable and starter terminal connections.
- If the battery was weak before the repair, test battery voltage and charging system output.
