How to Replace the Starter Motor on a 2013-2018 Ram 1500 (Trim: Express | Engine: V6 3.6L | Body: Standard Cab Pickup)
Step-by-step instructions with tools, parts, torque specs, and safety tips for 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016
🔧 Starter Motor - Replacement
The starter on your 1500 is mounted low on the engine near the transmission bellhousing, so access is usually easiest from underneath with the truck safely supported. This job requires battery disconnect first because the starter cable is always hot and can spark if handled live.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal before touching the starter. The main power cable is always live.
- Support the truck with jack stands. Never rely on the jack alone.
- Let the exhaust cool first. The starter sits close to hot underbody parts.
- If the truck has a security radio or memory settings, save them before disconnecting the battery.
- Keep the cable nuts in a tray.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- Turn the ignition off and remove the key fob from the truck.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
- Raise the front of the truck with a floor jack and support it with jack stands.
- Take a photo of the cable routing first.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm wrench to remove the negative battery cable.
- Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the post.
Step 2: Raise and secure the truck
- Use a floor jack to lift the front of the truck.
- Place it securely on jack stands.
- Remove the key if it is still nearby to keep the system fully off.
Step 3: Open up access to the starter
- From above, remove any intake ducting or air tube blocking access using a flat-blade trim tool and 3/8-inch drive ratchet if needed.
- From below, remove any splash shield or closeout panel with the correct 13mm socket if equipped.
- The starter is mounted at the engine-to-transmission area on the passenger side.
Step 4: Disconnect the starter wiring
- Use a 13mm wrench or 13mm socket to remove the main battery cable nut.
- Remove the smaller solenoid trigger wire connector if equipped.
- Keep the cable clear of ground points.
Step 5: Remove the starter bolts
- Use a 13mm socket, extension, and universal joint socket adapter if needed to remove the two starter mounting bolts.
- Support the starter with one hand as you remove the last bolt.
- Remove the starter from the bellhousing area.
Step 6: Install the new starter
- Position the new starter in place by hand.
- Install both mounting bolts finger-tight first with a 13mm socket.
- Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
- Reconnect the main cable and trigger wire. Tighten the cable nut snugly, but do not overtighten.
Step 7: Reassemble access parts
- Reinstall any splash shield or intake ducting with the proper 13mm socket and trim tool.
- Make sure no wires are pinched near the starter.
Step 8: Reconnect power and test
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
- Lower the truck off the jack stands.
- Start the engine and listen for normal cranking.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine 3-5 times to confirm consistent cranking.
- Check the starter area for loose wiring or rubbing.
- Make sure all dash warning lights turn off normally after startup.
- If the starter still clicks or spins poorly, recheck battery condition and cable connections.
