🔧 Grand Cherokee - Starter Motor Replacement

Replacing the starter motor on your Grand Cherokee involves safely disconnecting the battery, removing the starter wiring, unbolting the old starter, and installing the new unit. The starter is mounted low on the engine/transmission area, so you’ll be working from underneath.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before working. The starter has a large high-current power cable.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine and exhaust cool fully before starting.
  • ⚠️ Support your Grand Cherokee with jack stands. Never work under a vehicle held only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Keep the key fob away from the vehicle while the starter wiring is disconnected.
  • ⚠️ If equipped with Quadra-Lift air suspension, turn on Jack Mode before lifting.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • 10mm wrench
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension
  • 3/8-inch drive swivel adapter
  • Torque wrench 10-100 ft-lb
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Floor jack rated 3-ton minimum
  • Jack stands rated 3-ton minimum
  • Wheel chocks
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Work light

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Starter motor - Qty: 1
  • Starter mounting bolts - Qty: 2, if damaged or corroded
  • Electrical terminal protective grease - Qty: 1 small tube

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground.
  • Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • If equipped with Quadra-Lift, use the Uconnect menu: Controls > Settings > Suspension > Jack Mode.
  • Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
  • Wait 2 minutes after disconnecting the battery before touching starter wiring.
  • A swivel adapter lets the socket bend slightly so you can reach hidden bolts.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the Front of the Vehicle

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Grand Cherokee.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front frame support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Push lightly on the vehicle to confirm it is stable.
  • Put on safety glasses and mechanic gloves.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Shield if It Blocks Access

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the lower splash shield fasteners if installed.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to release any plastic push clips.
  • Set the shield and fasteners aside.
  • Keep bolts in a small cup.

Step 3: Find the Starter

  • Use a work light and look at the lower passenger side where the engine meets the transmission.
  • The starter is a round electric motor with one thick cable and one smaller wire attached.
  • The transmission bellhousing is the metal case where the transmission bolts to the engine.

Step 4: Disconnect the Starter Wires

  • Use a 13mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to remove the nut from the large battery cable terminal.
  • Pull the large cable off the starter stud and move it aside.
  • Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket to remove the nut from the small starter control wire.
  • The starter control wire tells the starter when to crank.
  • Move both wires away from the starter so they do not snag.

Step 5: Remove the Starter Mounting Bolts

  • Hold the starter with one hand because it is heavy.
  • Use a 15mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch drive swivel adapter to remove the starter mounting bolts.
  • Remove the lower bolt first.
  • Remove the upper bolt while supporting the starter.
  • Carefully lower the starter out of the vehicle.
  • Do not let the starter fall.

Step 6: Compare Old and New Starters

  • Place the old starter beside the new starter.
  • Check that the bolt holes, electrical terminals, and starter gear location match.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver only if you need to gently move a protective terminal cap.

Step 7: Install the New Starter

  • Lift the new starter into place by hand.
  • Start both mounting bolts by hand first. This prevents cross-threading, which means damaging the bolt threads.
  • Use a 15mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to snug both bolts.
  • Use a torque wrench 10-100 ft-lb and 15mm socket to tighten the starter mounting bolts to Torque to 68 Nm (50 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect the Starter Wires

  • Apply a light film of electrical terminal protective grease to the starter cable contact points.
  • Install the large battery cable onto the main starter stud.
  • Use a 13mm socket and torque wrench 10-100 ft-lb to tighten the large terminal nut to Torque to 13 Nm (115 in-lbs).
  • Install the small starter control wire onto its terminal.
  • Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket and torque wrench 10-100 ft-lb to tighten the small terminal nut to Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Check that both wires are routed away from exhaust parts and moving parts.

Step 9: Reinstall the Lower Shield

  • Place the lower splash shield back into position if removed.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall the shield fasteners.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to reinstall plastic push clips if used.
  • Snug the fasteners only. Plastic clips can break if overtightened.

Step 10: Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower your Grand Cherokee slowly to the ground.

Step 11: Reconnect the Battery

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the battery terminal until secure.
  • Do not overtighten the terminal clamp.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Grand Cherokee and listen for a smooth, strong crank.
  • If you hear one click or no crank, recheck the large starter cable and small control wire.
  • Make sure no wires are touching the exhaust.
  • If Quadra-Lift Jack Mode was enabled, turn it off: Controls > Settings > Suspension > Jack Mode.
  • Reset the clock and window auto-up function if needed after the battery disconnect.
  • Start the engine 3 times, waiting about 20 seconds between starts.
