🔧 Maxima - Starter Motor Replacement

Your starter motor cranks the engine when you push the Start button. Replacing it is mostly a remove-and-reinstall job, but on some V6 layouts it can be tucked under the upper intake, which adds time and parts.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-4.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Disconnect the negative battery terminal first to prevent an electrical short.
  • 🔥 Let the engine cool fully; the exhaust and radiator area can burn you.
  • 🧯 Keep metal tools away from the battery positive terminal and starter power stud.
  • 🧱 If you raise the car, support it with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Wheel chocks
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 3/8" torque wrench
  • 6" extension (3/8")
  • 12" extension (3/8")
  • Universal joint adapter (3/8")
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Flashlight
  • Magnetic pickup tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Starter motor - Qty: 1
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
  • Throttle body gasket - Qty: 1 (only if removed)
  • Upper intake manifold gasket set - Qty: 1 (only if upper intake is removed)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Maxima on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and make sure the key fob is at least 10 feet away from the car so it can’t wake modules while you work.
  • Disconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket and isolate the cable so it can’t spring back.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which starter layout you have

  • Use a flashlight and look down near where the engine meets the transmission (front side of the engine bay).
  • If you can see the starter body and wiring without removing the upper intake, follow Path A.
  • If the starter is not visible and appears buried under the upper intake manifold (the top “plenum”), follow Path B.

Step 2 (Path A): Remove intake ducting for access

  • Loosen the hose clamps using a flathead screwdriver.
  • Remove any clips with a trim clip removal tool.
  • Lift the intake duct/air tube out of the way.

Step 3 (Path A): Disconnect starter wiring

  • Unplug the starter solenoid connector by pressing the tab; use needle-nose pliers gently only if needed. Don’t pull on the wires.
  • Remove the power cable nut using a 12mm socket (common) or 14mm socket (some variants).
  • Move the cable aside so it can’t touch metal.

Step 4 (Path A): Remove the starter mounting bolts

  • Remove the starter bolts using a 14mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and a 6" extension (3/8").
  • If access is tight, add a universal joint adapter (3/8").
  • Support the starter with one hand as the last bolt comes out.

Step 5 (Path A): Install the new starter

  • Position the new starter and hand-thread both mounting bolts to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten mounting bolts using a 3/8" torque wrench and 14mm socket to Torque to Nissan factory specification.
  • Reconnect the power cable and tighten the nut using a 12mm socket or 14mm socket to Torque to Nissan factory specification.
  • Apply a thin wipe of dielectric grease to the connector seal (not the metal pin) and reconnect the solenoid connector until it clicks.

Step 6 (Path A): Reinstall intake ducting

  • Reinstall the intake duct and clamps using a flathead screwdriver.
  • Reinstall clips using a trim clip removal tool.

Step 2 (Path B): Remove the upper intake for access

  • Remove the engine cover if equipped (typically pulls up; if clipped, use a trim clip removal tool).
  • Remove the intake ducting using a flathead screwdriver and trim clip removal tool.
  • Disconnect any vacuum hoses and electrical connectors attached to the upper intake; use a flashlight and take a photo first for routing.
  • Remove upper intake fasteners using a 10mm socket / 12mm socket as applicable.
  • Lift the upper intake off carefully and set it aside.
  • Remove and discard old gaskets; install new upper intake manifold gaskets during reassembly.

Step 3 (Path B): Remove and replace the starter

  • Disconnect the solenoid connector and power cable using needle-nose pliers (for the tab) and a 12mm socket / 14mm socket (for the nut).
  • Remove the starter mounting bolts using a 14mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and extensions.
  • Install the new starter and tighten fasteners using a 3/8" torque wrench to Torque to Nissan factory specification.

Step 4 (Path B): Reinstall the upper intake

  • Install new intake gaskets and set the upper intake back in place.
  • Hand-start all bolts, then tighten evenly using a 10mm socket / 12mm socket.
  • Final-tighten using a 3/8" torque wrench to Torque to Nissan factory specification.
  • Reconnect hoses and electrical connectors (match your photo).
  • Reinstall intake ducting using a flathead screwdriver.

âś… After Repair

  • Reconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket and tighten securely.
  • Turn ignition to ON (without starting) and confirm no warning messages.
  • Start the engine and listen: it should crank strongly with no grinding noises.
  • Check that the intake ducting is fully seated (no hissing/whistling vacuum leak sounds).

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $550-$1,250 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $220-$650 (parts only)

You Save: $330-$600 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.5-4.5 hours.
