🔧 Grand Cherokee - Starter Motor Replacement

The starter motor cranks the engine when you turn the key or press the Start button. On your Grand Cherokee, the starter is mounted low on the passenger side of the 5.7L V8 near the transmission bellhousing, so the vehicle must be safely raised for access.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the starter wiring. The starter has a direct battery-power cable.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine and exhaust cool fully before working underneath. The starter area can be close to hot exhaust components.
  • ⚠️ Support your Grand Cherokee with jack stands only. Never work under a vehicle supported by a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses because dirt and rust can fall while working underneath.
  • ⚠️ Keep the key fob away from the vehicle while working so no one accidentally attempts to start it.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive extension set
  • 3/8-inch drive universal joint
  • Torque wrench rated 10-100 ft-lbs
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Floor jack rated 3-ton minimum
  • Jack stands rated 3-ton minimum
  • Wheel chocks
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Work light

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Starter motor - Qty: 1
  • Starter mounting bolts - Qty: 2, replace if damaged or corroded
  • Battery terminal corrosion protector - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground and shift the transmission to Park.
  • Set the parking brake firmly.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and locate the battery jump/remote terminal area if equipped, but disconnect the actual negative battery cable at the battery location before starter work.
  • The battery is under the front passenger seat area on this Grand Cherokee. Move the passenger seat rearward for access.
  • A universal joint is a small swiveling socket adapter that helps reach bolts at an angle.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery cable clamp.
  • Move the negative cable away from the battery terminal so it cannot spring back and touch.
  • Wait at least 2 minutes before working on the starter wiring.
  • Take a photo first.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the front of your Grand Cherokee at the proper front lifting point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the proper front support points.
  • Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
  • Keep the wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Put on safety glasses and mechanic gloves.

Step 3: Remove the Lower Shield if Equipped

  • Use a trim clip removal tool or flat-blade screwdriver to remove plastic push clips from the lower splash shield if it blocks access.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove any shield bolts.
  • Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.
  • Keep clips in a cup.

Step 4: Locate the Starter

  • Use a work light and look on the passenger side of the engine where the engine meets the transmission.
  • The starter is a small cylindrical motor with a thick battery cable and a smaller control wire attached to it.
  • Check how the wires are routed before removal.

Step 5: Remove the Starter Electrical Connections

  • Use a 13mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and extension as needed to remove the nut holding the large battery cable to the starter terminal.
  • Pull the large cable off the starter terminal and move it aside.
  • Use a 10mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver, depending on connector style, to remove or release the small starter control wire.
  • Do not pull on the wire itself. Pull on the connector body.
  • Label wires if unsure.

Step 6: Remove the Starter Mounting Bolts

  • Support the starter with one hand before removing the last bolt. It is heavier than it looks.
  • Use a 15mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, 3/8-inch drive extension set, and 3/8-inch drive universal joint to remove the starter mounting bolts.
  • Remove the lower bolt first if access is easier.
  • Remove the upper bolt while holding the starter steady.
  • Lower the starter carefully from the vehicle.

Step 7: Compare the Old and New Starter

  • Place both starters side by side on the ground.
  • Confirm the mounting ears, electrical terminals, and nose shape match.
  • Use a clean mechanic glove to wipe dirt from the mounting surface on the engine/transmission area.
  • Do not force the new starter into place if it does not match.

Step 8: Install the New Starter

  • Lift the new starter into position by hand.
  • Start both mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading. Cross-threading means the bolt is going in crooked and can damage the threads.
  • Use a 15mm socket, 3/8-inch drive extension set, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the bolts evenly.
  • Use a torque wrench rated 10-100 ft-lbs with the 15mm socket to tighten the starter mounting bolts to Torque to 54 Nm (40 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reconnect the Starter Wiring

  • Install the large battery cable onto the starter main terminal.
  • Use a 13mm socket and torque wrench rated 10-100 ft-lbs to tighten the terminal nut to Torque to 11 Nm (97 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect the small starter control wire until it is fully seated.
  • If the small terminal uses a nut, use a 10mm socket and tighten it snugly to Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Make sure the wires are not touching the exhaust or any moving parts.

Step 10: Reinstall the Lower Shield

  • Position the lower shield back in place if removed.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall the shield bolts.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool or your fingers to reinstall the plastic push clips.
  • Tighten shield bolts snugly. Do not overtighten plastic shield hardware.

Step 11: Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Slowly lower your Grand Cherokee to the ground.
  • Remove the wheel chocks.

Step 12: Reconnect the Battery

  • Apply battery terminal corrosion protector to the negative battery terminal if desired.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Tighten the battery terminal clamp to Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Make sure the cable is tight and cannot rotate by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Grand Cherokee and listen for a normal, smooth crank.
  • If you hear a click but no crank, recheck the battery cable connection and starter wiring.
  • If the engine cranks slowly, test the battery condition before assuming the new starter is faulty.
  • Check underneath for any loose shields, hanging wires, or tools left behind.
  • Drive normally for a short trip, then restart the engine once more to confirm the repair.
  • Reset clock, radio presets, and one-touch window functions if they lost memory after the battery disconnect.
