🔧 Starter Motor - Replacement

The starter on your Silverado is mounted low on the engine and is easier to reach from underneath. This job is straightforward, but space is tight and the battery must be disconnected before you begin.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the starter. This prevents accidental cranking and electrical short circuits.
  • Support the truck securely on jack stands before working underneath. Never rely on a jack alone.
  • The starter is heavy and may drop when the last bolt comes out. Hold it with one hand as you remove the final fastener.
  • Keep tools away from the battery cable on the starter. That cable is always hot unless the battery is disconnected.
  • Let the exhaust cool if the truck was driven recently.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm wrench
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 3/8-inch extension set
  • Torque wrench
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated for vehicle weight)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Flat-blade screwdriver

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Starter motor - Qty: 1
  • Starter mounting bolts - Qty: 2
  • Battery terminal cleaner - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Raise the front of the truck and support it with jack stands if needed for access.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench and isolate it so it cannot touch the terminal.
  • Wait at least 2 minutes after disconnecting the battery before starting work.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to remove the negative battery cable from the battery.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the battery post.

Step 2: Raise and secure the truck

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of the truck if needed for access.
  • Place jack stands under the frame and lower the truck onto them.
  • Make sure the truck is stable before crawling underneath.

Step 3: Locate the starter

  • From underneath, find the starter mounted at the lower rear of the engine near the transmission bellhousing.
  • Take a photo before removing wires.

Step 4: Remove the electrical connections

  • Use a 13mm socket to remove the nut from the large battery cable on the starter.
  • Remove the smaller solenoid wire connector if equipped, using a flat-blade screwdriver or by hand.
  • Keep the wires clear of the starter so they do not get pinched later.

Step 5: Remove the starter bolts

  • Use a 15mm socket, ratchet, and extension to remove the two starter mounting bolts.
  • Support the starter with one hand as you remove the final bolt.
  • Lower the starter out of the vehicle.

Step 6: Install the new starter

  • Position the new starter into place by hand.
  • Start both mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 15mm socket to tighten the bolts evenly.
  • Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect the wiring

  • Reconnect the small solenoid wire first.
  • Install the large battery cable nut with a 13mm socket.
  • Torque to 13 Nm (115 in-lbs).
  • Make sure the cable is fully seated and not touching any moving parts.

Step 8: Reassemble and lower the truck

  • Remove all tools from underneath the truck.
  • Raise the truck slightly with the floor jack, remove the jack stands, and lower it to the ground.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for smooth cranking.
  • Check for any warning lights on the dash.
  • If the engine does not crank, recheck the battery connections and starter cable nut.
  • Make sure no wires are rubbing on the exhaust or driveshaft.
