🔧 Starter Motor - Replacement

The starter on your Sequoia sits under the upper intake area, so this job requires removing several top-side engine components to reach it. Once access is opened up, the starter itself is straightforward to unbolt and swap.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting. The starter circuit carries high current.
  • The intake area may contain fuel vapors. Work in a well-ventilated area and keep sparks away.
  • Let the engine cool completely before touching the intake manifold, throttle body, or nearby hoses.
  • Use care around electrical connectors and vacuum lines. Label them as you remove them.
  • Assumption: access and fastener locations match the 5.7L 3UR-FE layout used on this Sequoia.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 3/8-inch extension set
  • Torque wrench
  • Flat blade trim tool
  • Pliers
  • Pick tool
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Starter motor - Qty: 1
  • Intake manifold gasket set - Qty: 1
  • Throttle body gasket - Qty: 1
  • Air cleaner duct clamp or replacement clips - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Shift to Park and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal with a 10mm socket and isolate the cable so it cannot touch the post.
  • Tip: Take photos of hose and connector routing before removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the air intake assembly

  • Use a 10mm socket and flat blade trim tool to loosen the air cleaner duct clamps and release any retainers.
  • Lift out the intake tube and air duct pieces to open access to the upper engine area.
  • Keep all clamps with their hoses.

Step 2: Remove the throttle body

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the throttle body fasteners.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector and move the throttle body aside.
  • Replace the throttle body gasket during reassembly.
  • Torque to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs) on installation.

Step 3: Remove upper intake manifold components

  • Use a 10mm socket, 12mm socket, and 3/8-inch extension set to remove the upper intake manifold fasteners and any brackets in the way.
  • Disconnect vacuum hoses, wiring connectors, and any attached breather lines as needed.
  • Lift the manifold carefully so you do not tear the gasket surfaces.
  • Replace the intake manifold gaskets during reassembly.
  • Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs) on installation.

Step 4: Locate and disconnect the starter

  • Find the starter mounted low in the engine valley area.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the starter electrical terminal nut and disconnect the wiring.
  • Remove any harness clips or brackets that block access.
  • Do not let the cable touch ground.

Step 5: Remove the starter motor

  • Use a 14mm socket and ratchet with extensions to remove the starter mounting bolts.
  • Lift the starter out of the engine valley.
  • Compare the old and new starter before installing the replacement.
  • Torque to 37 Nm (27 ft-lbs) on installation.

Step 6: Install the new starter

  • Position the new starter in place by hand first.
  • Use a 14mm socket to install and tighten the starter bolts evenly.
  • Reconnect the electrical terminal with a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs) for the starter terminal nut.

Step 7: Reinstall the intake system

  • Install new intake manifold gaskets and set the manifold back in place.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 12mm socket to reinstall all manifold fasteners and brackets.
  • Reinstall the throttle body with a new gasket.
  • Reconnect every hose and connector exactly where it came from.
  • Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs) for the manifold and 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs) for the throttle body.

Step 8: Reinstall the air intake assembly and battery

  • Reinstall the intake tube, clamps, and any clips using a 10mm socket and flat blade trim tool.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Double-check every connector before starting.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for a clean crank with no grinding or clicking.
  • Check for intake leaks, vacuum hissing, or a check engine light.
  • If idle is rough, recheck all hoses, connectors, and manifold seating.
  • Do one more visual inspection for leftover tools or loose fasteners in the engine bay.
